Zsa Zsa Gabor resting after another operation

Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband says the 94-year-old actress is resting after undergoing an operation at a Los Angeles hospital where she also is being treated for an infection.

Frederic Prinz von Anhalt said Sunday that doctors at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center successfully reattached a tube in Gabor's stomach that became loose and led to bleeding. The celebrity socialite was rushed to the hospital Saturday.

Von Anhalt says Gabor could be sent home within a few days. He says doctors are waiting for antibiotics to take effect on the infection.

He calls his wife a "fighter" and says he's "very optimistic."

Gabor has been hospitalized repeatedly since falling out of bed and breaking her hip in July 2010. She had a leg amputated in January.

Live SmackDown results for October 7, 2011

BILOXI, Miss. ? The one-year anniversary of SmackDown on Syfy (MORE) included the return of an angry Big Show, more reactions surrounding the Raw walkout, and a message from the EVP of Talent Relations about the importance of maintaining order on Friday nights.?

Big Show returned and chokeslammed Mark Henry (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After Mark Henry sidelined Big Show for four months by fracturing his leg in a steel chair, Show returned ? and he was pissed! After his demand for a World Title Match was denied by Henry, The World?s Largest Athlete went berserk, charged to the ring and unloaded on Henry with massive punches. Even a slew of WWE security personnel could not stop the onslaught.

After pushing his way through security in the ring, Show viciously speared Henry, then brutalized an entire ring full of security. When Henry tried to walk off with his title during the melee, The World?s Largest Athlete chased him down.

1205066753001|07:53At first it looked as if Henry was going to win the fight when he slammed Show into the ringside barrier. But The World?s Largest Athlete battled back and chokeslammed the champion through the announce table in a dramatic show of strength.

With Henry dazed and vulnerable, Show was prepared to inflict the exact same punishment that Henry used to put him out of commission. With the champion?s leg entangled in a steel chair, Show was ready leap on top of him from the steel ring steps. But just in the nick of time, Henry was spared when GM Teddy Long emerged to calm the angry giant by agreeing to give him what he wanted ? a World Championship Match ? as long as he did not leap on Henry. Show heeded the GM?s orders, but still blasted The World?s Strongest Man in the back with a steel chair for good measure. When will we see these two titans clash?

Randy Orton & Sheamus def. Christian & Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes (WATCH | PHOTOS)1205102104001|03:09
The powerhouse duo of Randy Orton and Sheamus proved too much to handle for Christian and Cody Rhodes. After The Celtic Warrior worked over Rhodes pretty good, he tossed Christian from the ring. Next, The Viper took over and dispatched of Rhodes with a debilitating RKO for the win.

Hornswoggle returned to SmackDown (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After making his return, Hornswoggle convinced Booker T to get in the ring and do a Spin-a-Roonie for the WWE Universe.

1205070489001|01:09WWE EVP of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis said SmackDown?s success is vital (WATCH)
In a meeting with Teddy Long, WWE EVP John Laurinaitis expressed his support for Long and explained the importance of what happens on Friday nights. ?If you lose control of SmackDown like Triple H lost control of Raw, the entire WWE Universe is going to be in turmoil,? he said.

Ezekiel Jackson def. Jinder Mahal
(WATCH | PHOTOS)
Former Intercontinental Champion Ezekiel Jackson absolutely manhandled Jinder Mahal. After brutally slamming Mahal to the canvas four consecutive times, Jackson made him tap out after a painful session in the Torture Rack.

1205100011001|01:31Randy Orton explained why he didn?t walk out on Raw (WATCH)
In an interview with Matt Striker, Randy Orton said he won?t beg like Christian for one more World Title match. ?If I have to tear through the entire SmackDown roster in order to have another championship match, then I?m all for it,? he said. And not willing to lump himself in with the other Superstars who participated in the Raw walkout, The Viper said ?If I have a problem with Triple H, I?ll deal with Triple H personally.?

Big Show demanded a World Title opportunity (PHOTOS)
After making an emotional comeback in front of the WWE Universe, Big Show threatened to repeatedly punch Mark Henry in the head and take the World Heavyweight Championship from him. After Show called Henry out, the champion obliged and emerged at the top of the ramp to say he?ll let Show know when and if he gets a match with Henry. Furious, The World?s Largest Athlete retorted by saying he?d put Henry through the announce table and break his ankle with a steel chair if he didn?t get the answer he wanted by the end of the night.

Divas Champion Beth Phoenix def. Alicia Fox (WATCH | PHOTOS)1205100030001|02:43
In a decisive and impressive victory, newly crowned Divas Champion Beth Phoenix made quick work of Alicia Fox, trouncing the smaller Diva with the Glam Slam. Afterward, Natalya locked Fox in a painful submission hold, while Phoenix forced her to cry out in pain over the mic.

Jack Swagger & United States Champion Dolph Ziggler def. WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne in a Non-Title Match (WATCH | PHOTOS)
As the WWE Tag Team Champions approached the ring, they were viciously attacked from behind by Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler. When the match eventually got started, Kingston came out swinging with an emotional offense. However, the champions never seemed to be able to recover from the initial assault. In the end, Swagger planted Bourne into the canvas with the Gutwrench Powerbomb for the win. Afterward, Vickie Guerrero came to the ring to help celebrate the victory.

The WWE Tag Team Champions vowed not to appear on Raw (WATCH)1205070488001|00:47
In an interview with Matt Striker, WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne spoke about the Raw walkout. Although they felt things might not entirely be Triple H?s fault ? until he steps down from running Raw ? Air Boom declared they will only be appearing on SmackDown.

Booker T and Michael Cole clarified their position on the Raw walkout
Michael Cole said he walked on Raw about because Triple H?s ego has been out of control and he hasn?t been listening to people?s grievances. On the other hand, Booker T said he is neutral about the situation and only walked out on Raw because he needed to use the bathroom.

WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio def. Sin Cara ?Azul? (WATCH | PHOTOS)
After earning the right to be called Sin Cara at WWE Hell in a Cell, The Mexican Sensation tangled with fellow Mexican Superstar, WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio for the first time ever. Despite a valiant effort, Sin Cara ?Azul? was forced to tap out to Del Rio?s cross armbreaker. After the match, Sin Cara ?Negro? charged to the ring and attacked Sin Cara ?Azul,? leaving him writhing in pain after a leap from the top rope. Despite what went down at WWE Hell in a Cell, clearly there is unfinished business between the two masked Superstars. (MORE on the two Sin Caras)

1205087044001|04:40The Raw walkout will continue (WATCH | PHOTOS)
The night started with a group of Superstars explaining why they walked out on Raw, citing an unsafe work environment. David Otunga went as far as saying they are also prepared to walk out of SmackDown, unless Triple H steps down from running day-to-day operations. The last to speak for the group was Del Rio, who said he inspired everyone to walk out on Raw. The WWE Champion then declared that none of them will appear on Raw again until Triple H steps down from running Raw, and that he?s eager to compete on SmackDown. Hearing enough, Teddy Long emerged and ended all the talk by announcing two matches for the night: the tag team main event, as well as Del Rio vs. Sin Cara. Schwarzenegger inaugurates his museum in Austria (AP)

THAL, Austria ? Arnold Schwarzenegger ? the bodybuilder, movie star and ex-governor who's in the middle of a messy divorce ? invoked his life as a model for young people Friday during the formal inauguration of a museum dedicated to him in his native Austria.

Hundreds of fans braved driving rain and chilly autumn temperatures to fete Austria's most famous living son at the museum, located in the two-story Thal village house where Schwarzenegger was born.

The museum, open since July, is a repository of items that include his first barbell, the metal bed that he slept on as a youth, several life-size "Terminator" models and the polished dark wooden desk he sat behind while California's governor.

Schwarzenegger also unveiled a bronze statue of himself flexing and in trunks as the young body builder from Austria whose rippling biceps led to his Hollywood career ? and the popularity that paved the road to the governor's office.

Shielded by an umbrella, Schwarzenegger used the occasion to deliver an inspirational speech to youthful fans. Invoking the title of one of his early films, he told them anything was possible as long as they "stay hungry."

He said he wishes that every person who visits the museum "understands that everyone can be successful in his own way."

"My personal success has less to do with millions of dollars or with the headlines in the media that are not always positive and also not with being clapped on the shoulder by Barack Obama and other world names," he said. "Personal success is the result of determination, hard work and stubbornness.

"For me, this is not only a museum," he added, gesturing to the yellow-stuccoed house behind him. "It is also a symbol of will ... everyone has a chance."

The bronze statue is one of several commissioned by Schwarzenegger earlier this year. But even if some in the crowd knew that the Schwarzenegger likeness was not unique, they didn't seem to care. Bodyguards had to pry a path through people holding an umbrella in one hand and trying to touch their idol with the other, whistling and cheering as he passed by.

With Schwarzenegger was Patrick, his son from his marriage with Maria Shriver. The two are divorcing. But the museum displays photos of Schwarzenegger and Shriver in happier times, and Schwarzenegger described "the marriage with Maria" as one of the days "that I remember with great fondness."

The marriage unraveled after Schwarzenegger acknowledged being the father of child outside of his marriage ? something that at least some fans gathered Friday suggested tarnished his reputation.

"We Austrians are proud of him and what he accomplished," said Gottfried Karner, from the Upper Austrian city of Steyr. "But there are certain things he did that one does not agree with."

Most Austrians have stayed focused on Schwarzenegger's successes since he left for the United States in 1968, first as Mr. Universe, then as "Conan the Barbarian" and the "Terminator" ? and finally his 2003 election as governor.

Even before his private life came up for criticism, however, Schwarzenegger's cult status in Austria took some knocks because of his support of the Iraq war and the death penalty as California's governor.

Criticism grew after he refused to pardon two convicted murderers in a row in 2005 to the point where he ordered city fathers in Graz ? Austria's second largest city where he spent his youth ? to strip his name from the Graz soccer stadium and sent back the city's highest award ? its ring of honor.

Since then, the mood has swung back to adulation ? and Friday's speeches reflected that. Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, who opened the ceremonies, described Schwarzenegger as "one Austrian known by everyone in the world, adding: "We as Austrians are proud of you."

Worcester Polytechnic Institute researcher Ki Chon is turning smartphones, and eventually tablet devices, into sophisticated medical monitors able to capture and transmit vital physiological data

WORCESTER, Mass. -- An iPhone app that measures the user's heart rate is not only a popular feature with consumers, but it sparked an idea for a Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) researcher who is now turning smart phones, and eventually tablet devices, into sophisticated medical monitors able to capture and transmit vital physiological data.

A team led by Ki Chon, professor and head of biomedical engineering at WPI, has developed a smart phone application that can measure not only heart rate, but also heart rhythm, respiration rate and blood oxygen saturation using the phone's built-in video camera. The new app yields vital signs as accurate as standard medical monitors now in clinical use. Details of the new technology are reported in the paper "Physiological Parameter Monitoring from Optical Recordings with a Mobile Phone," published online, in advance of print, by the journal IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

"This gives a patient the ability to carry an accurate physiological monitor anywhere, without additional hardware beyond what's already included in many consumer mobile phones," the authors write. "One of the advantages of mobile phone monitoring is that it allows patients to make baseline measurements at any time, building a database that could allow for improved detection of disease states."

The application, developed by Chon and WPI colleagues Yitzhak Mendelson, associate professor of biomedical engineering, Domhnull Granquist-Fraser, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, and doctoral student Christopher Scully, analyzes video clips recorded while the patient's fingertip is pressed against the lens of the phone's camera. As the camera's light penetrates the skin, it reflects off of pulsing blood in the finger; the application is able to correlate subtle shifts in the color of the reflected light with changes in the patient's vital signs. Chon, who is an expert on signal processing, has previously developed algorithms that monitor a range of vital signs using traditional clinical devices like a Holter heart monitor. In the new study, Chon and his team created and adapted algorithms to process the data gathered by the phone's video camera.

To test for accuracy, volunteers at WPI donned the standard monitoring devices now in clinical use for measuring respiration, pulse rate, heart rhythm, and blood oxygen content. Simultaneously, the volunteers pressed a finger onto the camera of a Motorola Droid phone. While all devices were recording, the volunteers went through a series of breathing exercises while their vital signs were captured. Subsequent analysis of the data showed that Chon's new smart phone monitor was as accurate as the traditional devices. While this study was done on a Droid, Chon said the technology is easily adaptable to most smart phones with an embedded video camera.

Furthermore, since the new technology can measure heart rhythm, Chon believes the smart-phone app could be used to detect atrial fibrillation (AF), which is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia. "We are building that application now, and we have started a preliminary clinical study with colleagues at UMass Medical School to use the smart phone to detect AF," Chon said.

Chon and colleagues are also at work developing a version of the mobile monitoring technology for use on video-equipped tablets like the iPad. A patent application for the technology has been filed. "Imagine a technician in a nursing home who is able to go into a patient's room, place the patient's finger on the camera of a tablet, and in that one step capture all their vital signs," Chon said. "We believe there are many applications for this technology, to help patients monitor themselves, and to help clinicians care for their patients."

Stem cell advance uses cloning

Method using eggs to do reprogramming is successful in humans

Web edition : Thursday, October 6th, 2011

The same technology that is used to clone animals can induce human eggs to reprogram adult cells to a primitive embryonic-like state. The accomplishment, reported in the Oct. 6 Nature, may one day help researchers develop a source of stem cells that could be used to replace a patient?s own cells.

Scientists had previously shown through cloning experiments that egg cells from many different kinds of animals could perform the feat, but until now, there was no evidence that human eggs could do it.

?There was a big question mark whether this was indeed possible,? says Dieter Egli, a researcher at the New York Stem Cell Foundation.

Though promising from a research perspective, the stem cells Egli and his colleagues produced can?t be used to treat patients.

?This is only partial success,? says George Q. Daley, a stem cell researcher at Children?s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. That?s because the newly created stem cells contain three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two.

The extra chromosomes come from the egg, which contains one set of chromosomes that a woman would pass along to her offspring. In animal cloning, researchers remove the chromosome-containing nucleus from the egg and replace it with the nucleus from an adult cell. Something in the egg causes the adult cell to revert back to its earliest primordial stage so it acts like a fertilized egg and creates an embryo.

But when researchers tried that technique with human cells, the resulting cells stopped dividing after only four or five rounds. The scientists could reprogram adult cells only when they inserted adult cell nuclei into eggs that retained their own nucleus. So the resulting embryonic cells contain one set of chromosomes from the egg and the normal two sets from the adult cell.

The researchers hope that they will eventually develop ways of removing the egg chromosomes and still reprogram the adult cell. Egli thinks that if the researchers can pull out the egg?s nucleus after the reprogramming but before the two nuclei have a chance to merge, they can create stem cells that might be used in patients.

Regardless of the clinical applications of the newly created stem cells, the study is a ?landmark,? says Daley. ?We?re still trying to understand the basic mechanism of reprogramming.?

The new cells may help scientists correct flaws in another technology that is used to create stem cells without using embryos. Stem cells called induced pluripotent stem cells are created by transforming adult cells directly into embryonic-like cells by adding a cocktail of proteins. The technology holds great promise, but researchers have recently discovered that the reprogramming in the transformed cells is incomplete (SN: 8/14/10, p. 15; SN: 10/9/10, p. 28). Cancer or other problems might result if such cells were transplanted into a person.

With the new cloning technique, researchers may be able to figure out how the egg reprograms cells. That knowledge could then aid scientists in finding the missing ingredients that could be added to current gene cocktails to make direct, complete reprogramming possible.

Egli and his colleagues don?t yet know what the missing ingredients are, but speculate that they are either contained within the egg?s nucleus or associated with it.
