MDUSD HOPE Needs Your Donations

I am writing to let you know about children in our community who do not have enough to eat, adequate clothes to wear to school, or a predictable place to live.? As the holiday season approaches, please accept this letter as an invitation to learn more about our local homeless children and foster youth.? I would like to ask that you do two things A) please consider making a contribution to homeless children and foster youth and B) please forward this letter or email to five or more people.?? ??Thank you so much! Last year, the Mt. Diablo Unified Homeless Outreach Program for Education (Mt. Diablo HOPE) served 549 homeless students and Mt. Diablo Foster Youth Services served 236 foster youth.? That?s 785 vulnerable children who need our support!? Most of the homeless children we served lived with mothers and fathers who were one paycheck away from homelessness, lost their jobs, and had no choice but to live in motels, cars, homeless shelters, churches, synagogues, the Winter Nights program, or double up with friends or family. We saw an increase unaccompanied teenagers (58) who lived with the families of friends. ?Homeless children and foster youth with disabilities were especially vulnerable and received extra support.? Mt. Diablo Unified has great success supporting foster youth ? we have the highest graduation rate in California (93%), however, the holidays are often a difficult time for foster youth who live in group homes and with foster families.? Your contribution will go a long way toward making the holidays a little brighter for our children.?? Homeless children and foster youth reside in communities and attend schools throughout our school district; we serve homeless students and foster youth from Walnut Creek, Clayton, Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Bay Point. People may not realize how widespread our populations are because they are not visible in the community. ?Over the years, we have received generous donations from our teachers, parents, Local One - CST, CSEA district office personnel, PTSAs, Mt. Diablo school board members, members from every union / bargaining unit in our school district, and students themselves.? We are grateful to the teachers of Mt. Diablo Unified for their compassion, hard work, and the excellent instruction that they provide for our students every school day.? As support staff, we assist children with life stressors that can interfere with their education.?? Please consider donating gift cards to Safeway, Target or Kohl?s. ?You may send donations by check or gift cards to: Elsa Dalpiaz, Secretary, Mt. Diablo Homeless Outreach Program for Education, 2730 Salvio St., Concord, CA 94519 or; drop donations off with Lori Amenta at the Mt. Diablo Unified District Office, 1936 Carlotta Drive, Concord, CA. ?Please make checks out payable to ?Mt. Diablo HOPE.?? Please indicate if you would like a receipt for tax purposes. ?Kohl?s, Target, Safeway, or gift cards to other stores are helpful because they are easy to distribute and allow students and families to choose their own gifts, clothes, or food.? This year, we are going online to connect generous donors with recipients. ?If you or your organization would like to sponsor an individual family, please register online www.mdusd.org/hope.? To sponsor a family, the minimum contribution that we suggest is $150.? By the way, we don?t use the term ?adopt a family? for the holidays because the word adopt can have loaded meaning for foster youth.? Last year, the small act of sharing this letter resulted in contributions from all over the world. Thank you for your consideration! James C. Wogan, LCSW, Administrator, School Linked Services & The School Linked Services Team

Election 2012: why status quo result could mean more Washington gridlock

Serious business awaits the nation's lawmakers, the 'fiscal cliff' foremost. But the results of Election 2012 could give Washington's main players cause to dig in their heels.

By David Grant,?Staff writer / November 7, 2012

President Barack Obama and supporters celebrate victory at McCormick Place, on November 6, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois.

After the longest and most expensive campaign in American political history, every center of power in Washington ? President Obama, House Speaker John Boehner (R) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) ? have reason to interpret the 2012 election as justification for digging in their heels.

The problem? The ?fiscal cliff? awaiting lawmakers in the lame duck session, a pile of stalled legislation, and the ever-growing national debt can?t take much more congressional gridlock.

Take Speaker Boehner. The Ohio Republican saw his colleagues turn back a host of challenges and emerge with the House majority largely unscathed. And that means something simple: The American voters affirmed the House GOP, so why should they change?

?While others chose inaction in the face of this threat, we offered solutions. The American people want solutions ? and tonight, they've responded by renewing our majority,? Boehner told Republican loyalists assembled in Washington. "With this vote, the American people have also made clear that there is no mandate for raising tax rates.?

Then there?s the Senate, where many Republicans expected 2012 would be Senator Reid's last as majority leader.?Senate Democrats not only retained their majority, they added a seat to their side to boot ? though at press time two Senate races were still undecided.

On Tuesday night, however, Reid and Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell played a familiar, sad tune. Reid, the man who routinely excoriated Republican filibusters of legislation while himself choking off the federal budget process for three consecutive years offered up the same ?get with the program? message to Republicans he delivered with no success time and again in the halls of the Senate.

"Now that the election is over, it's time to put politics aside, and work together to find solutions. The strategy of obstruction, gridlock, and delay was soundly rejected by the American people. Now, they are looking to us for solutions,? said Reid in an e-mailed statement. ?We have big challenges facing us in the months ahead. Democrats and Republicans must come together, and show that we are up to the challenge.?

At the same time, Senator McConnell continued to rip the president.

Climate blindness risked as satellites lose their eyes

OUR eyes around Earth are seeing less. US environmental satellites that helped forecasters predict superstorm Sandy are failing. By 2020, the fleet could have just a quarter of the sensors it has today.

In a paper posted online, Kevin Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, warns that new launches are not keeping up with the failures of older instruments. As a result, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration could have just 20 sensors in orbit by 2020.

"We are basically going blind in terms of our ability to monitor the planet," says Antonio Busalacchi at the University of Maryland in College Park, who contributed to a recent report on the state of climate satellites.

There have been delays sending satellites into polar orbits. The first of NOAA's new JPSS satellites won't launch until 2017, which last year forced NASA to launch a stop-gap satellite called Suomi NPP. Any failures before 2017 will leave a gap in weather data.

Climate research is sensitive to launch delays, as new instruments need to operate simultaneously with old ones for a year to calibrate their sensors. Suomi's sensors may fail before 2017, warns Trenberth.

Court increases Safe Air fine | Stuff.co.nz

The punishment imposed on Safe Air after one of its engineers was killed at work last year has been increased after an appeal.

In a decision released yesterday, the High Court increased the fine by $13,750.

The Air New Zealand subsidiary, based at Woodbourne airfield, near Blenheim, was originally fined $56,250 and ordered to pay reparation of $22,500 after a hearing in Blenheim District Court in May.

Fairfax does not have a copy of the decision but according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the reparation payment was not changed on appeal.

The ministry appealed against the punishment to the High Court. Southern general manager Jean Martin said the case involved a serious failure that was not adequately reflected by the original fine.

"This decision should send a clear message to employers of the need to not only identify, but also to adequately control, all hazards to their employees at work. It also serves as a sad reminder of the consequences of failing to do so."

Renwick man Miles Hunter died while working on an engine at Woodbourne airfield on August 8 last year.

He was sucked into a C-130 Hercules engine fixed to an outdoor test-bed.

Safe Air, which specialises in aviation maintenance and repair, was convicted on May 30 on one charge under the Health and Safety Act.

Martin said the ministry was committed to ensuring a safe workplace for New Zealanders and took seriously all cases where failures exposed workers to serious harm.

Safe Air general manager Heather Deacon said the company had accepted responsibility but was disappointed by the appeal.

5 Lies People Who Pay For Sex Tell Themselves | World of ...

This guest article from YourTango was written by Teresa Maples.

A recent study published by Christine Milrod and co-author Ronald Weitzer analyzes 2,442 postings written by people who pay for sex on an online discussion board that reviews sex providers and their services. Approximately one-third of the posts discussed emotional intimacy between?sex workers?and their clients.

Many of the people who paid for sex expressed a desire to grow their relationships beyond the sex act and develop feelings and mutual love with the person. So what kinds of things do people who pay for sex tell themselves?

5 Ways People Who Pay For Sex Lie To Themselves

1. ?I?m not doing anything wrong.??

The responders make excuses and do not obey the law. These comments were posted by people who are paying for sex. These people are a sub group of the population who are engaging in illegal activity. From a societal view, those who act outside the norms and rules of the society are not the norm for the culture.

Those who engage in paying for sex are breaking the law. Many of the people who engage in prostitution are also involved in a primary relationship like marriage or are living together. Usually, there is a social contract between the two people to be there for each other. In paying for sex, they are breaking this contract as well. In many ways, they are committing relational violence in their primary relationship. 22 Ways Couples Can Overcome Infidelity

2. ?This could turn into a real relationship.??

The responders think they are getting a real relationship,?but they are really seeking instant gratification. In one survey, 32% of customers arrested for soliciting a?prostitute?said they bought sex because they ?didn?t have time? for a conventional relationship. 28% did not want ?the responsibilities? of a relationship, and 18% said they would ?rather have sex with a prostitute than have a conventional relationship with a woman.?

In other words, 78% of the people paying for sex did not want to bother with a ?real? relationship and would rather pay for sex.? An unspoken message here is that the transaction between the sex worker and the client is about money and control. The client is paying to have sex acts done to him, which help feed his fantasies. He gets to call the shots. The sex worker is providing a service to get paid.

3. ?I just do it for the thrill.??

The responders say they are seeking the thrill, but they may be setting themselves up for a full blown sexual addiction. Biologically, people who seek intensity and thrill by engaging in a sex acts are programming their brains to seek greater and greater thrills to get the same effect. The engagement of risky behavior leads to more risky behavior. Many of the responders might experience anxiety and withdrawal symptoms if they chose to stop paying for sex. 7 Signs Your Partner Is A Sex Addict

4. ?I think I might love them.??

But really, the responders could be acting out their fantasies.?They could be?imagining they have a ?feelings of love? for the sex worker. Even in ?real? relationships there is an aspect of projecting what you want onto the other person. It makes sense that someone who pays a ?repeat? sex worker could imagine he has a ?real relationship? with her. I wonder what would happen if he stopped paying?

5. ?I derserve it.??

The responders have a sense of entitlement. In other words they are saying, ?I want sex a certain way and I deserve to get it.??While we are pre-programmed by design as humans to propagate the earth, similar to animals. We also have the ability to think and feel. Yes someone can pay for sex and feel momentarily satisfied; however, in my opinion they are depriving themselves the joy of true authentic?emotional connection?with a real person based on mutuality for the long term.

If you have paid sex workers and have tried to stop and keep going back to it, seek professional help. You can overcome this behavior. There is a way out. You can click on any of the links to contact?Sex Addicts Anonymous(SAA),?Sexaholics Anonymous(SA),?Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous(SLAA),?Prodigals, Inc.,?PureDesire,?SexHelp.com?or?myself?for help.

How do you get love and emotional intimacy?

It all begins with a commitment to being the healthiest you can be, from the inside out. Learn to love all the parts of yourself even the places that hurt or feel shameful. Healthy sexuality between two people, involves vulnerability and safety in the relationship. Both partners are attached to one another physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

This model of relationship mutually benefits each partner. It takes work and time to develop emotional intimacy, and it also requires delayed gratification. By learning how to be a safe person emotionally with a chosen safe person, you can develop a more complex positive response system that is stable and sustainable over time. Choose wisely. Resveratrol Capsule | Health & Fitness

Resveratrol is one of the healthiest chemical compounds known to man. You can find a good selection of resveratrol capsule at your local health food stores, but what is all the buzz about?

The anti inflammatory properties of resveratrol have many benefits to the body. Inflammation is the leading cause of many diseases. It is also believed to help dramatically in the fight against heart disease. The anti inflammatory properties assist the arteries in keeping the blood flow strong to your heart. Scientists believe this is why the French nation has such a low occurance of heart disease, despite their diet. Resveratrol is found in red wine, a common staple of the French diet.

Trans resveratrol is really the secret to anti-aging. This is the active form of the resveratrol polyphenols that are found in the seeds, stems and skins of the red wine grapes. Trans resveratrol is only active when kept from the light, oxygen and the sun. In this pure form, the trans resveratrol activates the SIRT1 gene for longevity and benefits the cellular productivity. In this pure form, the trans resveratrol is found at the peak of potency.

Resveratrol has been found in many different things including grapes. This red wine compound has been studied and shown to provide many benefits including such possibilities as aiding to help fight against cancer, helping to fight the aging process, and even assisting people by benefiting their eyesight. Besides being able to see better and clearer people were also reporting that their colors were brighter and more defined after adding the Resveratrol pills or supplements to their diet. There are even some special studies that show where Resveratrol pills have helped fight against Alzheimer?s disease. Other studies have shown that resveratrol pills also help fight against stroke and helping one to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

With clinical studies still restricted primarily to dosage in mice and insects, there have been no definitive standards set for human dosage. Studies conducted on humans for Resveratrol dosage remain limited, so established guidelines have not yet been produced.

One such product, which contains 98 percent trans-Resveratrol, is Wine-RX, found at http://winerx.org/. By harnessing the beneficial properties of the red wine antioxidants, namely Resveratrol, these supplement pills are able to give you benefits equal to one hundred bottles of red wine in each pill. Use of this supplement can give you vastly improved physical and mental well being, as well as give you the younger looks which everyone seeks.

East Coast hikers missing in Glacier National Park

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) ? Rescue teams at Glacier National Park searched in wintery conditions and rugged terrain Sunday for two East Coast hikers reported missing by family members.

Park officials said 50 searchers were looking for 32-year-old Neal Peckens of Virginia and 32-year-old Jason Hiser of Maryland. Hometowns weren't available.

Weather was the biggest challenge facing searchers, who have found 18 inches of snow on the trail at higher elevations and five-foot drifts in some areas, spokeswoman Denise Germann said.

"The area they are working in is very steep and exposed," she said. "It's right along the Continental Divide, and it's very windy."

More rain and possibly snow in higher areas was expected on Sunday, she said. A helicopter dropped off some searchers inside the park early Sunday but Germann said low clouds moved in, preventing aerial searches.

The two were reported missing Friday after failing to catch a flight home from Montana. Their vehicle was found late Friday, and the search started Saturday.

Germann said it's not clear if they were prepared for cold weather, or if they have much experience in the backcountry. Searchers believe the two were hiking and not mountain climbing.

"We believe they are still in the park," she said. "We don't know what clothing or gear they've got."

Officials believe the two started hiking from the North Shore Trailhead at Two Medicine on the east side of the park on Tuesday and planned to return to Two Medicine on Wednesday, and then do some day hikes Thursday.

She said park rangers along with Flathead County Search and Rescue members were taking part in the search. She said some are on foot, some on horses and some searching with dogs.

The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies with a 50 percent chance of rain on Sunday with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, dropping to the upper 30s or low 40s overnight. Winds are from the southwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Confessions of a Stay At Home Mum: Product review: Hotpoint ...

We were recently incredibly lucky and frightfully grateful to be chosen to review the Hotpoint RZA36G under counter freezer in Graphite thanks to the wonderful people at Appliances Online. First impressions upon setting it us was sleek insofar as to say the freezer looks incredibly sleek. The Graphite colour and the slightly convex design give it a very modern look that would easily be right at home in most homes. Alternatively if you want ultra modern they also do it in an ultra chic black.
We already have an old and decrepit fridge freezer that moans more then The Husband does but unfortunately It's simply rather to small to cope with the demands of The Party of Five, fitting in the weekly shop has become a tactical and logistical art in conjunction with a shed load of luck and crossed fingers. If I ever find that sugar daddy, an American style fridge will be top of The list.?

For a couple or a singleton under the counter appliances offer a decent amount of storage yet requiring little space as it makes use of under counter space yet could also be used as a stand alone product if you have the space.?However as many families will agree?in the current economic climate with astronomical increases in food It's becoming a nightmare to feed a family on a budget. Two excellent ways of making the most of your food budget is to batch cook and to time your trips to the super market to coincide with their daily reductions. Yet, the one thing both of these have in common is the need for a lot of freezer space. After all what's the point in buying some bargain fresh meat if you have nowhere to put it? Likewise, batch cooking saves time, effort and money yet is simply not viable if you don't have the freezer capacity. If you don't have the space for a roomy chest freezer, this is where a second freezer that fits easily under your counter comes in to it's own. Enter the Hotpoint RZA36G . With three decent sized drawers plus top skinny drawer its perfect for freezing all your bargains, your batches of home cooked ready meals as well as the family favourates. Or alternatively you could use it to to store your secret ice cream stash and emergency vodka supply, whatever freezes your boat.

?The RZA36G is easy to set us, literally plug in and wait until the high temp light goes off. Simples. It boasts a nifty 'quick freeze' function which is activated by a quick press of a button which is ideal to ensure your supermarket frozen goods remain frozen after the journey from shop to home. The four main drawers feel sturdy and spacious, however they are opaque so you do have to open them to see what you have lurking in there but in all honesty It's only a minor con and If you have an organization OCD you could always get jiggy with a labeling system. Another thing worth mentioning about the drawers is that if you need that little bit more room you can easily remove the drawers and just use the crevices instead. ?Personally I like the slightly convex shape however I can see that this might not be to your taste if you prefer a more flat streamlined look. ?I'll also admit i'm terribly shallow and love the sparkle effect at the top. ? The door can be fixed either side so perfect whether you're a lefty or a righty and the handle is incorporated into the design and unobtrusive. One con that was mentioned on another review of this product is the noise. I won't lie to you, It's not silent. However, neither is my ancient groaning fridge which makes far more noise then this! The noise is minor and importantly normal. According to The instruction booklet It should also decrease within a few months of use. To put it into perspective, if I'm baking or cooking in the kitchen, I don't notice it. At family meal times in the kitchen, I don't notice it. At night when everyone else is in bed, if The Husband sits at at the kitchen table which directly in front of it, he notices it. However, you can't hear it in the adjacent room nor in the room above. It really isn't an issue, especially if its a secondary freezer that you keep in a utility room or garage. It certainly wouldn't put me off purchasing. In a nutshell, It's a great size, looks good, very reasonable RRP, cost effective to run and I'd highly recommend it. If you purchase from Appliances Online this product is currently eligible to qualify you to receive a ?50 Ocado gift voucher to use online (minimum spend ?80 and offer expires on 22/10 )

?Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review and the review is an honest and genuine account of my opinion and experience of this product in my home.

I can't let this post end without saying a few words about Appliances Online. I am a stickler for good old fashioned customer service, especially as I have worked in that arena. Far too many companies lack the very basics of customer service in attitude, actions and demeanor. Not so with Appliances Direct. I can honestly say dealing with them has been am absolute pleasure. From arranging to review to arranging delivery to receiving delivery, all three separate points of contact involving four members of staff were brilliant. The staff are enthusiastic, friendly, respectful, helpful and clear. It was all effortless and seamless. They offer three different delivery slots, you get an automated reminder call on the morning of delivery and the delivery men even phoned to let us know they were five minutes away. If required they will deliver into a room of your choice, unpack and set it up for you and for a small additional cost even take away your old appliance. I really do recommend them and wouldn't hesitate should funds allow to purchase from them in future. If you don't already you can follow them on ?Facebook and take part in their fab competitions.

?Disclaimer: I was not asked to review the company and received no payment for doing so. I believe in credit where credit is due and thought it only fair to share my genuinely positive experience of the company.?
