Aide to top drug lord arrested in Mexico

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alleged drug kingpin's lieutenant handled his security in Durango, Defense Ministry says
  • The arrest will affect Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's Sinaloa cartel, official says
  • Guzman is a billionaire who is wanted in Mexico and the United States

(CNN) -- Mexican army special forces have arrested a top lieutenant for alleged drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

Troops arrested Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Friday in "a surgical operation in Cuiliacan" in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, said Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, a Defense Ministry spokesman.

Cabrera, who was responsible for the activities of the Pacific Cartel in Durango and the southern part of the state of Chihuahua, was detained after fleeing from Durango, Trevilla told reporters.

"The analysis of his behavior permitted (us) to find the building where he was hiding" and Cabrera was taken into custody without violence, Trevilla said. Firearms, computer equipment and other documentation were seized, too, he said.

Cabrera, who appeared Monday in the office of a prosecutor who specializes in organized crime, was responsible for Guzman's security in Durango, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

He is charged with possessing firearms reserved for use by the army and falsification of a public document, a spokeswoman for the attorney general said.

Trevilla said Cabrera was involved in kidnappings, extortion and arson.

"The violence caused him to rise within the organization," said Trevilla, who predicted that the arrest will affect the cartel's leadership and abilities.

Guzman, who is under indictment by U.S. authorities in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, is described by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as one of "the most powerful drug traffickers in Mexico." In 2004, the U.S. government announced a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

He is accused of running a major network that distributes cocaine and heroin.

He is worth about $1 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which began listing him on its billionaires list in 2009. The magazine lists him as No. 55 on its Most Powerful People list and as the only crime lord on its list of Mexico's billionaires.

December 26th. 2011 by A. Blaire | Australia Weddings | Casual Elegance | 2 comments -->

After a weekend of all that is holly and jolly, getting back to the work week can be a little daunting. Thankfully we are serving up some beauties in wedding form today to help get you through your post-holiday haze. And what could be better than a beach chic soiree styled by?Scout & Charm? A mix of vintage with a splash of elegance and a whole lot of style ? this little?ditty?is sure to keep the?festivities?going! Click here for even more!

From Scout & Charm? This wedding speaks of a true representation of an chic Australian beach wedding. It wasn?t your common beach ceremony on the sand accompanied with Balinese flags or any other ?typical? beach decor, that you see so often here, but rather a down to earth, casual and elegant scene set right on the shores of one of the world?s most famous and busiest beaches?the iconic Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia.

Heidi was such an easy going bride and placed all of her trust in us. She pretty much gave us free reign on all of the styling elements? We had been given only one requirement from her ?I want daisies?all I want is daisies!? And with that in mind we delivered. Everywhere you turned there was daisies?tins of daisies, jars of daisies, daisies upon daisies.

The ceremony was set up on top of the infamous Bondi Icebergs swimming pool with an uninterrupted outlook over Bondi Beach?a view that most people would kill to see once in their lifetime. Her aisle was created by using antique wooden banana boxes from Coffs Harbour adorned with doilies and tea cups filled with daisies. We also had pinwheels made up and placed these in the backs of the chairs which added a unique and whimsical touch to just an ordinary chair cover and sash. Tins of daisies hung on the fence which over looked the ocean and we had a custom flag hung on the flag pole hand made from ribbon, lace and tule. It floated beautifully over the ceremony in the ocean breeze.

The bride looked absolutely stunning in a loose flowing silk and lace gown by Rose and Ruby. Her bridesmaids matched her theme of vintage, feminine, lace and daisies by wearing matching crochet lace dresses and all accompanied by bouquets of daisies.

When you walked into the reception venue, it gave out a warm, whimsical, romantic and dreamy vibe. There were soft fairy lights and vintage floral buntings strung around the room.?We had hand decorated old jars using hessian, lace and ribbon and placed them throughout her reception venue. There was also custom made coasters which read ?Eat, Drink & be Married? on them along with Heidi and Daniels names and marriage date, a nice personal touch. The room also was also styled to include a chill out area for guests and was made up by using vintage lounge suites and other mismatched vintage furniture.

For the grooms love for lollies, a lolly buffet was created using rolled down sacks and wooden scoops. We had custom made lolly bags made up which read ?Love Sweet Love? which also doubled up as a favor for guests.

We hope you enjoy looking through the following photos taken by the amazingly talented brother and sister duo Jane and James Allen as much as we did.

Airport X-ray suitcase surprise: Poisonous snakes (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Surprised airport workers in Argentina found hundreds of wriggling poisonous snakes and endangered reptiles inside the baggage of a Czech man who was about to board a flight to Spain.

Karel Abelovsky, 51, was made to open his baggage at Buenos Aires' international airport after police spotted reptiles in the X-ray scanner. They found 247 exotic and endangered species in all, packed inside plastic containers, bags and even socks, each labeled in Latin with their scientific names.

"The airport workers couldn't believe it when they saw the movement inside the suitcase. It was like an animated cartoon," a source in the office of Judge Marcelo Aguinsky said Tuesday. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the judge's investigation isn't complete.

Abelovsky was released on about $2,500 bail after surrendering his passport and is refusing to talk even though even though he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Authorities believe the Czech was a courier for a criminal organization that smuggles exotic species whose exports are banned, a judicial source told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Authorities said Abelovsky only arrived in Argentina several days earlier and couldn't have had time to gather the animals alone.

Aguinsky believes the boa constrictors, poisonous pit vipers and coral snakes, lizards and spiders could have escaped the cloth suitcase in the unpressurized cabin of the Dec. 7 Iberia flight to Madrid, and perhaps attacked people there or at his final destination in Prague, where antidotes for South American snakes aren't common, the source added.

Most of the animals and bugs are being held under quarantine at the Buenos Aires Zoo, while some of the venomous snakes were sent to Argentina's national health institute, which has a high-security department where scientists develop antidotes using venom from snakes.

The species include lizards native to Mexico and snakes, spiders, snails and other species from northern Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Some were already dead in the suitcase, while others have succumbed to stress since then. Many were quite weak on arrival at the zoo, but most are still alive.

Wild snakes and reptiles are known to carry infectious diseases and so must be kept apart from the public and other animals, said Miguel Rivolta, the lead zoo veterinarian.

"It's difficult to find the right kind of bugs they eat, and to replicate as much as possible their environment in the wild," Rivolta said.

Another round of powerful and possibly damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph are expected to hit?Southern California.

The National Weather Service says the north to northeast winds will kick up before dawn on Thursday and continue through early Friday as a high pressure system builds over the Great Basin.

Animal People?s Statement on Animal Rights Extremism

In this holiday season Animal People reminds us all that we are privileged to live in a democratic society, where different points of view can be expressed, discussed and debated freely, and where violence has no place as a tool to advance social change.

Speaking of Research welcomes and applauds this statement.? We hope the new year will only expand the circle of those open to civil dialogue and public debate.

The Animal People?s board resolution reads in its entirety:

The Animal People, Inc. Board Resolution on Activist Tactics

? ? ? ? Arresting the cycle of violence in human affairs is of greater importance than the accomplishment of any single tactical objective?whether trying to stop the slaughter of animals for food,? fur,? sport,? or religious rituals;? addressing the scientific use of animals;? or dealing with any other particular exploitation of animals.? We enjoy the opportunity to address social injustices,?? inequities,? and cruelties (toward animals,? children,? women,? gay people,? poor people,? and racial and ethnic minorities) because we are privileged to live in a democratic society,? which through the effort of generations of our forebears has (however tenuously at times) replaced the old paradigm of ?might makes right? with respect for the rights of individuals,? democratic process,? public debate,? freedom of expression,? and divergent points of view.

??????? Part of our social contract as civilized people is that we agree to trust in the ability of our ideas to persuade,? and to operate within established systems until they can be improved by peaceful means.

? ? ? ? We believe that no principle should be more inviolable than the principle that violence?including psychological violence such as intimidation,? the invasion of familial privacy,? and engagement with persons not responsible for or directly involved in issues (such as relatives of parties with whom there is a dispute)?must never be employed as means to achieve moral progress and advance social change.

? ? ? ? Protesters have the right to express dissent,? rally,? and even agitate in order to arouse public concern in the hope of prompting action,? but demonstrations,? rallies,? and actions involving civil disobedience should be held at appropriate sites,? such as public areas including shopping malls,? universities,? government buildings,? or office buildings connected to the issues of concern.

4 jailed for 'exorcism' killing of Australian (AP)

DARWIN, Australia ? Four people convicted in the beating death of a woman during what they said was an exorcism ritual on a remote Australian island were sentenced Friday to several years in jail.

Sarah Bara was beaten to death with sticks last year on Groote Eylandt off the northern Australian coast. Last month, Glenys Wurrawilya, Susie Wurrawilya, Paul Wurramara and Roderick Mamarika pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter in connection with the beating, which several children witnessed.

Some of the accused had originally claimed that they beat Bara as part of an exorcism intended to cleanse her of the devil. But on Friday, Northern Territory Supreme Court Justice Peter Barr said the accused attacked Bara simply to cause her pain and humiliation.

"I am not satisfied that any of the accused thought she had the devil in her," he said.

On the day she was killed, Bara had been asked to find a bag containing medication for Susie Wurrawilya. When she couldn't find it, both Glenys and Susie Wurrawilya began to hit her. Bara was then forced to sit on the ground while a circle of fire was lit around her and was again struck with sticks. An autopsy found she had been hit with extreme force more than two dozen times.

Mamarika and Wurramara did not participate in the beating, but watched and did nothing to stop it, Barr said.

The four received sentences ranging from five years to seven-and-a-half years in jail.

Groote Eylandt, home to an Aboriginal and mining community of around 1,500, is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the northern Australia mainland.

Startup Brings Ecommerce Directly to Magazine Websites (Mashable)

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. Name: 72Lux

[More from Mashable: You Know Your Klout Score. What?s Your Kred Score?]

Quick Pitch: Shop across many online retailers with a single checkout and shipping fee.

Genius Idea: Bringing that service to third-party publishers.

[More from Mashable: Keas Is Like FarmVille for Corporate Wellness]

Shopping for women's apparel and accessories across different retailers isn't as difficult as it was a few years ago, thanks to search tools such as ShopStyle and Google Product Search. Checking out, however, can still be a chore when you're dealing with multiple site registrations and shipping fees.

72Lux eliminates much of the hassle by allowing you to shop from more than 900 retailers from its website, including such recognizable brands as Bloomingdales, Macy's and Yoox. You can browse (by designer, garment type, color and size), search and select different goods from retailers, and check out only once. What's more, you'll pay a flat shipping fee of $15, although returns have to be addressed specifically to individual retailers.

The startup takes a cut of every sale, which founder and CEO Heather Marie says is greater than the 2-3% affiliates usually receive.

That's a promising business in and of itself, but what's even more promising is the ecommerce solution 72Lux is developing for third-party publishers. As we've seen, many retailers are developing content offerings on their websites to make them more like shoppable magazines. Now, certain consumer magazines -- Marie declined to disclose which -- are working to allow customers to shop directly from their sites, instead of referring them elsewhere to purchase. The first launch will be announced in Q1 2012, Marie says.

That could open up a significant new revenue stream for publishers, although it's not yet clear what effect that will have on magazines and their readers. Enabling readers to quickly and seamlessly purchase the goods they're reading about is, yes, a convenience, but there's also the risk that readers will begin to question recommendations for products that publishers have such an obvious, vested interest in.

72Lux has raised $300,000 in seed funding to date and is currently raising its next round.
