Indians often forgotten chapter in 1930s catastrophe

LUBBOCK, Texas ? The Public Television debut Nov. 18-19 of Ken Burns? movie ?The Dust Bowl? is expected to continue stimulating the discussion it initiated since its premiere this spring about human activities? impact on the environment.

The two-part documentary shows how settlers in the Great Plains created a devastating 10-year drought by overcultivating what had once been stable tall-grass prairie home to buffalo grazing and the American Indian culture based on it.

?A sea of grass once the domain of Indians and buffalo disappeared beneath the blade of a plow,? narrator Peter Coyote says at the outset of the film.
Burns, The Weather Channel weatherman Al Roker, of ?Wake up with Al,? and television producer-newscaster Paula Zahn are hosting a virtual town hall meeting on Thursday, Nov. 15, to broach this and other related subjects in advance of the PBS release. Entitled ?Lessons from the Dust Bowl,? the Internet encounter at www.youtube.com/pbs opens at noon MST.

The live event transmitted from WNET?s studio at Lincoln Center in New York City is aimed at creating a national dialogue regarding the Dust Bowl?s legacy on both the environment and the culture of the United States.

It addresses what promoters call ?a morality tale about our relationship to the land that sustains us ? a lesson we ignore at our peril.?
The film crew granted Native Sun News an advance copy of the movie during one of the most recent of numerous sneak-previews, which was at the Society of Environmental Journalists conference in Lubbock, not far from the center of the Dust Bowl of 1930-1940 ? the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles.

?Until the arrival of European and American settlers in the late 19th Century, the southern Plains of the United States were predominantly grasslands, the home and hunting grounds of many Native American tribes and the range of untold millions of bison,? the website for the film notes.
?In 1930, with the Great Depression underway, wheat prices collapsed. Rather than follow the government?s urging to cut back on production, desperate farmers harvested even more wheat in an effort to make up for their losses. Fields were left exposed and vulnerable to a drought, which hit in 1932.?
In the very first minutes of the four-hour production, one of the survivors interviewed admits, ?We were just too selfish and we were trying to make money. It didn?t work out.?

Other survivors interviewed detail experiences of dust storms that match dramatic visuals, coining phrases such as ?pillars of dust choked out the midday sun,? ?almost surreal,? ?nowhere you can run, you can?t escape it.?

The exodus of migrants this generated is immortalized in John Steinbeck?s 1939 novel ?The Grapes of Wrath? and the ensuing motion picture by the same name.

Indian communities suffered as did everyone in those Depression years. Many Oklahoma Indians moved westward during the Dust Bowl, increasing the Native population in California, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society.

The era has been the subject of recent investigation by Native Americans deprived not only of land and liberty in Oklahoma, but also of places in history books dedicated to the exodus.

A descendant of Indian Okies, San Francisco historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz can be credited with the most thorough examination of the Native American experience of the Dust Bowl, recalling it in her book ?Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie.?

?Most Okies claim Indian blood,? Dunbar-Ortiz wrote in an essay entitled ?Rethinking the Image and Role of the Okies.? A cornerstone of the Native American Studies program at California State University at Hayward, she noted, ?The Okies were more accurately Southwestern for they came not only from Oklahoma but also surrounding states. By 1950, 4 million people or nearly a quarter of all persons born in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, or Missouri, lived outside that region. A third of them settled in California while most of the others moved to Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. The best known period of this trek westward is the period of the Dust Bowl, the 1930s, when the majority of the migrants first camped, and then settled mainly in the agricultural valleys of California.?

Following in Dunbar-Ortiz?s footprints, San Francisco researcher Remy Cox raised sufficient funds in 2011 for a narrative ?about my family?s part in the Okie migration to California and my reverse migration to prove our Native American heritage.?

In her account ?Indian Blood Along the Dust Bowl Trail,? based on a journey to Oklahoma, she relates how the Cox family role ?was part of the Okie migration to California? in the 1930s. ?The Coxes moved out west in a rusted Ford flatbed along with thousands of other migrant workers,? she said.
Her grandfather, known as ?Pop,? and his four brothers and sisters picked cotton along the way and slept in the Ford at night. ?School was a luxury, but Pop?s mom enrolled him every time the family stopped to work. At the tender age of 12, he learned two things fast,? she said. ?The first was that life was hard in a migrant family. The second? The only thing worse than being an Okie was having Indian blood.?

In the precursor to Burns? picture, the spellbinding 1936 Dust Bowl classic film ?The Plow that Broke the Plains,? the U.S. Resettlement Administration illustrates how the dust storms of the decade affected 100 million acres of the southern Great Plains.

The Resettlement Administration was a New Deal federal agency that, between April 1935 and December 1936, relocated struggling urban and rural families to communities planned by the federal government after dust clouds blew all the way east to Chicago, Buffalo, Boston, Cleveland, New York City and Washington, D.C., depositing tens of thousands of tons of dust.

?It was a decade-long natural catastrophe of biblical proportions,? as filmwriter Timothy Egan describes it, ?the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history, when the irresistible promise of easy money and the heedless actions of thousands of farmers encouraged by their government resulted in a collective tragedy.

?It?s a classic tale of human beings pushing too hard against nature and nature pushing back.?

When it premiered at the 34th Telluride Mountainfilm Festival in May, The Daily Sentinel newspaper of Grand Junction, Colo., described Burns as ?one of the most well-known documentary filmmakers of the past 20 years ? synonymous with an archival style and a passion for historical and environmental topics.?

Accompanying his latest film is a study guide entitled ?The Dust Bowl: An Illustrated History,? written by historian Dayton Duncan with a preface by Burns and published by Chronicle Books.

Total solar eclipse, Nov. 13, 2012: Hinode to support ground-based observations

ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2012) ? On Nov. 13, 2012, certain parts of Earth will experience a total solar eclipse, which, like all eclipses, will only be visible when you are aligned in a straight line with the moon and the sun. In this case the eclipse will only be seen from a narrow corridor in the southern hemisphere that is mostly over the ocean but also cuts across the northern tip of Australia. The JAXA/NASA Hinode mission will experience a partial eclipse of the sun near the same time as the observers in Australia. Hinode will coordinate its observations with those from the ground, before, during, and after the eclipse to produce a combined, scientifically interesting dataset.

Watching a solar eclipse -- using appropriate instruments to protect the eyes since you should never look at the sun directly -- is a crucial way of seeing the dim structures around the edges of the sun normally obscured by the brightness of the sun itself. Indeed it was during eclipses that scientists first observed the sun's atmosphere, the corona, which extends beyond the more easily seen surface, known as the photosphere.

In modern times, we know that the corona is constantly on the move. Made of electrified gas, called plasma, the solar material dances in response to huge magnetic fields on the sun. Structural changes in these magnetic fields can also give rise to giant explosions of radiation called solar flares, or expulsions of solar material called coronal mass ejections, CMEs -- which make the corona a particularly interesting area to study.

"There are certain aspects of the corona that you can only see during an eclipse," says Jonathan Cirtain, the project scientist for Hinode at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. "We'll change where Hinode points during the eclipse to support the different regions being observed from the ground."

Several groups will be doing observations from Australia. Although we have learned to make artificial eclipses using modern telescopes, owing to the distance of the moon, these natural eclipses are actually substantially beyond what we can do in terms of suppressing the light from the disk of the sun. This allows us to do unique science observations during these brief periods. A group from University of Hawaii will measure the intensities of various types of ionized iron atoms (atoms that have lost electrons) by measuring the radiation emitted at different stages of ionization. Since the iron atoms lose more electrons as the temperature increases (increasing the ionization stage), mapping such radiation can help scientists observe the temperature distribution throughout higher levels of the sun's atmosphere than can usually be seen.

A second group is led by NASA-Marshall and will observe a solar phenomenon known as plumes. Plumes are large structures that extend far out into the sun's corona and never turn back around to hit the sun again (as some other solar structures do.) These are typically seen in areas where the sun is more quiet, and again are hard to spot next to the brightness of the sun itself. Plumes are constrained to follow the very magnetic fields of the sun itself, so they can be a tool for mapping the sun's complex magnetic system, which, in turn, is thought to be the driving force for most events on the sun.

"Hinode will provide context images," says Cirtain. "It can see both the corona and the disk of the sun, and the hope is to be able to correlate the emission seen by eclipse observations on the ground to where its coming from on the sun itself."

Since the view of the eclipse from Australia only lasts for two minutes, the Hinode team has had to organize how to quickly capture the context images desired. But, together with the ground observations, those two minutes can help provide observations that are only rarely possible. The next solar eclipse will be a partial solar eclipse, visible again from Australia, on May 10, 2013. The next eclipse visible from parts of the Northern Hemisphere will be Nov. 3, 2013.

Greece To Blacklist Illegal Online Gambling Operators by Dec. 6 ...

Steven Stradbrooke
November 14, 2012
No Comments

greek-online-gambling-blacklistTruly, this week is only a couple days old but the board of directors at Bwin.party digital entertainment likely already wishes it was over. As co-CEO Norbert Teufelberger beats an inglorious retreat to the UK following his detention by Belgian police, Greece is now telling Bwin.party and other unlicensed operators serving Greek punters to get the hell out of Dodge (and Athens) by Dec. 6 or face a decade in prison, up to ?500k in fines and ?severe administration penalties,? which we assume means being forced to untangle the country?s messy finances using only a slide rule and a No. 2 pencil.

The Hellenic Gaming Commission issued warning notices on Nov. 5 to all operators currently serving the Greek market without the government?s say-so. These operators are being given a one-month grace period in which to wind down their affairs, after which any operators still serving the market will be put on a blacklist (much as in Belgium). Banks will be forbidden to process transactions for any company on the blacklist and IP-blocking will cut off punter access. The Commission?s notice said it was asking for support from other EU regulators ?and will appreciate proactivity? by same ?to inform and strongly advise? operators they regulate to comply with Greek wishes.

Greece passed a new gaming law in August 2011, which was supposed to be followed by a public tender for online gaming licenses. While that has yet to occur, Greece issued temporary permits to 24 operators ? including Sportingbet and Paddy Power ? on the condition that they ante up two years of back taxes (similar to what transpired in Spain). Other major European operators, including Betfair, Bet365 and William Hill, chose instead to file a grievance (via the Remote Gambling Association) with the European Commission over what they viewed as the Greek gaming law?s discriminatory provisions.

IS THE BWIN.PARTY OVER?
Bwin.party, reportedly Greece?s online gambling market leader, also chose not to apply for a license and filed its own EC complaint in November via its European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) mouthpiece. Unless Bwin.party has learned a lesson from Tuesday?s strong-arm tactics in Belgium, a business-as-usual approach in Greece would result in its name appearing on yet another blacklist and creating another no-fly zone for Bwin.party execs.

With Bwin.party?s Nevada online poker tech provider license application hearing expected sometime early in the new year, shareholders are likely starting to wonder if Bwin.party execs are treating the hearing as a foregone conclusion. If continued nose-thumbing at European regulators ultimately proves too blatant for US regulators to ignore and eliminates the possibility of Bwin.party adding a US revenue stream, could the next Bwin.party AGM be a bring-your-own-pitchfork-and-torch affair? (Entirely uncorroborated scuttlebutt has Teufelberger?s arrest the result of a tipoff Belgian authorities received from co-CEO Jim Ryan, who is presumably itching to ditch the ?co-? from his business card.)

Of course, the public companies currently doing business in Greece will eventually ?choose? to leave, much in the way one ?chooses? to keep breathing. Their shareholders have no appetite for risk and video clips of senior management being frog-marched away in handcuffs tend to have a depressing effect on share prices. Public protestations about ?illegal? laws don?t mean much in practical terms; it?s been seven years since the World Trade Organization declared the US anti-online gambling stance to be a breach of international trade rules yet Antigua still hasn?t received its rightful redress.

WHERE DOES PLAYTECH FIT IN?
It will be interesting to see how the Greeks treat Playtech, which, via its partnership with German outfit Gauselmann, is one of eight prospective bidders for the Greek government?s one-third stake in lottery/betting monopoly OPAP. Playtech also supplies technology to a number of Greek-facing operators, including (for the moment) William Hill Online. If Playtech licensees choose to ignore the Greek blacklist, would Playtech escape criticism and/or legal action?

In the past, Playtech has taken an ?it?s our clients that are breaking the law, not us? stance regarding its revenue streams from licensees operating in China, Malaysia and Germany, but much will depend on how broadly Greece chooses to define ?operator.? As with Bwin.party?s Belgian brouhaha, the fallout from the Greek clampdown may extend well beyond its borders. The fact that Playtech founder Teddy Sagi did time in an Israeli prison in the 1990s for stock manipulation was noted by Nevada regulators when William Hill?s sports betting license was being considered and further European controversy might eliminate any possibility of Playtech participating in a regulated US online poker market.

Sacramento Real Estate Numbers

Sacramento Real Estate

Is it any wonder why home buyers are finding multiple offers on homes for sale in Sacramento? ?The real estate chart to the left is a depiction of how many homes for sale, those in pending sale and Sacramento real estate sold over a 15 month period.

Although the number of homes that sold is up by 12.9% over last month, the number of homes for sale was down by 7.8% leaving .9 month worth of inventory on the real estate market for sale. ?And when comparing October 2012 and August 2011 inventory is down a whopping 61.5%. ?The average price per square foot is up 3.9% over the previous month and there has been an 11.6% increase over a 15 month period.

If you would like to know what Sacramento homes for sale are just click on the link.

Sacramento Short Sale Report

Distressed homeowners listing their homes for sale as short sales?in Sacramento last month went down by 11.3% and comparing last month?s Sacramento short sale inventory to the past 15 months, it went down by 71.1%. There could be 2 reasons for this lack of short sale homes for sale?

  1. There are fewer Sacramento homeowners having trouble paying their house payments
  2. Distressed Sacramento homeowners know the Debt Forgiveness Act that protects them ends on December 31, 2012 so it is no longer a viable alternative to foreclosure for them unless it is extended. ?Time is running out!

It was nice to see that short sales days on the market went down from a high of 167 days to 71 days last month which means the banks are approving short sales faster ?than they were a year ago.?

Sacramento Traditional Home Sale

Again there was a lack of inventory on the real estate market for sale when it came to the traditional homes for sale. The numbers were down over last month by 7.2% with only 983 homes for sale. The good thing was that the number of homes sold rose over last month by 21% with 894 homes selling, leaving 1 month of inventory on the real estate market for the home buyers.

The average price per square foot went up over last month by 3.3% and over a 15 month time period it?s gone up by 7.2%. ?As always it?s refreshing to see 31 days on the market for the traditional home sales.

Be sure to click on ?Luxury homes for sale around Sacramento for the most current luxury homes for sale around Sacramento.

Sacramento Bank Owned Homes

This is a graph that pleases me and has done month over month?with fewer bank owned homes for sale over a 15 month time period. Last month there were 2.2% fewer bank owned homes for sale in other words, foreclosures. The fewer foreclosures, the better for real estate and the recovery.

And if you are interested in seeing the current Foreclosed homes for sale, simply click on the link provided.

Based on the real estate chart to the right, there were 78.9% fewer foreclosed homes for sale than back in August 2011. ?Music to my ears!

90% A Royal Affair

All Critics (49) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (5)

It does a fine job of dramatizing the pure power of ideas and the attraction of like minds. And what happens when those ideas, and that attraction, runs counter to the pleasures of the most powerful man in the land.

"A Royal Affair" is basically a good-looking set of historical Cliffs Notes.

This highly polished costume drama is exceptionally well-made and a model of intelligent restraint, but it is also unapologetically earnest and a bit on the bloodless side.

With its sumptuous settings, urgent romance and intellectual substance, A Royal Affair is a mind-opener crossed with a bodice-ripper.

Unfortunately it never fully comes to life.

While it's lavish and lush in all the expected costume-drama ways, A Royal Affair never bogs down in period detail.

Epic and intriguing, it's a cautionary tale that emerges as one of the best foreign films of the year.

It's a film about a society at a crossroads, with two competing visions of the future being hashed out against a backdrop of political intrigue. Sound familiar?

Hefty historical drama has some racy, violent moments.

Beautifully acted and lush look at a real-life court threesome in Denmark at the end of the 18th century indeed pleases.

Looks sumptuous and contains meaty, provocative ideas. It's a feast of a film, one that will send you scurrying for background on the real people behind this true story.

Director Nikolaj Arcel, who also co-wrote the screenplay, stages the action in a brisk, modern mode that makes 'A Royal Affair' easily digestible and satisfying.

...while Mads Mikkelsen has become an international star and has the sexier role here, it is Mikkel Boe F?lsgaard who really astonishes, always keeping us wondering if the King's madness is real or, at least in part, a tactic.

A richly conceived and compelling historical drama about two soulmates who try to rock the authorities and bring radical change to eighteenth century Denmark.

At least for a while, Arcel manages to animate the long-settled debate, at least until the inevitability of its resolution becomes too clear to overlook.
