"You come in here and you play for your teammates, you don't play for yourself. This is a very selfless team," Kinsler said. "That's something outside the clubhouse. ... My main focus is to play hard for my teammates and do what I can to win a game."
Just more than five months after they twice came within one strike of a World Series championship before losing in seven games to St. Louis, the Rangers opened the new season on a picture-perfect day - 75 degrees under blue skies - and played the game exactly how manager Ron Washington prefers.
It is a familiar and successful script.
Colby Lewis (1-0) struck out nine in his first opening day start. Three relievers then worked scoreless innings, with new closer Joe Nathan working a perfect ninth.
And the offense manufactured the needed runs against White Sox starter John Danks (0-1).
"A well-played game," said Michael Young, the longest-tenured Ranger in his 12th season. "The first inning was perfect."
Kinsler had a leadoff double in the first for Texas, before a sacrifice bunt by Elvis Andrus and a sacrifice fly by Josh Hamilton. Kinsler's homer in the third made it 2-0.
After Chicago tied the game by scoring twice in the sixth, including Adam Dunn's record-tying eighth opening day homer, Hamilton led off the bottom of the frame with a single and scored on a single by Young.
The loss spoiled the managerial debut of Robin Ventura, who before the game had his first meeting with Nolan Ryan since charging the mound 19 seasons earlier against the Hall of Fame pitcher. Ryan is now president, CEO and part-owner of the Rangers.
"We just talked. I congratulated him on the last couple of years. He's done a great job," Ventura said.
Ventura, a surprise hire by the White Sox after Ozzie Guillen went to be Miami's manager, was a 26-year-old third baseman for the White Sox when he charged the mound against Ryan on a hot August night at old Arlington Stadium in 1993. Ryan, 20 years older and in the last year of his playing career, got Ventura in a headlock and landed several blows.
The two hadn't spoken until Ryan went to the White Sox clubhouse before the opener.
As for his first game as a manager, Ventura said, "I figured we'd lose a game at some point this year."
Lewis walked only one over six innings, throwing 70 of 100 pitches for strikes. The only other Rangers pitcher with nine strikeouts in a season opener was Ryan in 1991.
"Colby threw extremely well, and it was great to get Joe out there on opening day, get the first one of a big crowd, with a one-run lead," Young said. "We knew it we'd chip away and push one more run across, we'd have a chance to win."
Alexi Ogando, an All-Star and 13-game winner as a starter last season, is back in the bullpen and struck out all three batters in faced in the seventh after Texas regained the lead and Lewis left. Nathan, the former Minnesota Twins closer, got a strikeout in the ninth.
Dunn pulled a ball into the second deck of seats in right field to start the sixth. Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr. are the only other major leaguers who have eight homers in openers.
"It would've been a lot sweeter if we'd pulled it out today and we could talk about the win instead of that," Dunn said. "When I stepped in, he was ready to go. Luckily I didn't have time to think. If I had, I probably would have done something bad."
Dunn batted third in the White Sox lineup. Last year, the highly paid slugger hit .159 with only 11 homers while striking out 177 times in 415 at-bats.
Alex Rios was hit by a pitch with two outs in the White Sox sixth, and the speedster was on the run when Alexi Ramirez singled to left. Rios scored to tie it at 2.
Danks' first opening day start came in the stadium he visited often growing up in Austin about three hours away and where he always expected to pitch an opener after being drafted ninth overall by Texas in 2003. But he was traded to Chicago in December 2006, and got a new $65 million, five-year contract from the White Sox this winter.
"This was a fun game, it really was," said Danks, who struck out six with no walks in six innings. "All in all, it was disappointing to get beat, but I feel like I'm where I need to be. That's a good lineup over there. ... If I can be this good or better, it should be a good year."
NOTES: It was the sixth time Dunn had homered in the first game of the season. He twice had two homers on opening day, in 2005 and 2007 while with Cincinnati. ... The 13 strikeouts by Texas pitchers were a record for opening day. The previous record was 11, in that 1991 opener when Ryan had nine.

Popular painter Thomas Kinkade died from natural causes Friday in his California home, his family said. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.
By NBCBayArea.com and msnbc.com staff
One of the most popular artists in America, "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade, died?Friday at his home in Los Gatos, Calif., his family said.
He was 54, and his family issued a statement that his death appeared to be from natural causes.
"Thom provided a wonderful life for his family,'' his wife, Nanette, said in a statement. "We are shocked and saddened by his death.''
His paintings are hanging in an estimated?one out of every 20 homes in the United States, the San Jose Mercury News reported. Fans cite the warm, familiar feeling of mass-produced works of art while it has become fashionable for art critics to dismiss his pieces.
Kinkade lived with his wife and was the father of four girls,?NBCBayArea.com reported.
"Thomas Kinkade, the celebrated 'Painter of Light' is one of the most widely collected and beloved artists of our day," Kinkade's website states. "Each year millions of people are drawn to the luminous light and tranquil mood of Kinkade's paintings and include his creations in their lives through prints, books, and other fine collectibles."
The University of California?Berkeley graduate had a strong faith in God, which served as the foundation for his artwork.
"I try to create paintings that are a window for the imagination," Kinkade said on his website. "If people look at my work and are reminded of the way things once were or perhaps the way they could be, then I've done my job."
Kinkade's?Media Arts Group?took in?$32 million per quarter from 4,500 dealers across the country 10 years ago, before going?private in the middle of last decade, the Mercury News reported.?Paintings are priced?hundreds of dollars to more than $10,000.
His website also offers?prints, mugs, nightlights and other home-decor items adorned with his paintings, which feature bridges, churches, cottages, Disney scenes, gazebos estates and the outdoors.
On Friday, the Mercury News reported that Kinkade's?family was traveling to Australia?and unavailable for further comment.

In 2010, his?production?arm, Pacific Metro of Morgan Hill, Calif.,?filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection?a day after a $1 million payment was due to former Kinkade gallery owners who?won a judgment after claiming Kinkade used his Christian faith as a tool to fraudulently induce them to invest in his galleries, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time. From 1997 through May 2005, as?galleries failed,?Kinkade reaped more than $50 million from his prints and licensed product lines, according to testimony in the case cited by the Times.
In 2006, the Times reported that former Kinkade dealers told the newspaper that the FBI was looking into allegations that Kinkade and his top executives fraudulently induced investors to open galleries and then ruined them financially. The company, in a Sept. 1, 2006, statement called the allegations a "smear campaign."

BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) ? Malawi has known rule by Britain and by a mercurial dictator. Over the last few days, however, it wasn't clear who was leading this impoverished southern African country, as doctors disclosed Malawi's President Bingu wa Mutharika had died but the government insisted he was only ill.
In the end, Joyce Banda, who had held onto her post of vice president despite falling out with Mutharika, was sworn in on Saturday in a brief ceremony in Lilongwe, the capital. Earlier Saturday, she presided over a Cabinet meeting and held a news conference at which she was flanked by Cabinet ministers, the army commander, national police chief.
The Malawi government only confirmed the president's death on Saturday, two days after the leader of the impoverished southern African country died and a day after it was announced by doctors.
The delay in announcing Mutharika's death and allowing Banda to step in led to speculation politicians were squabbling over succession. Banda may have to contend with powerful enemies at home as she tries to lead her country out of economic crisis and repair relations with international donors with whom Mutharika had clashed.
"I sincerely hope there is no room for revenge," Banda said after her inauguration in parliament. "We shall stand united."
Gift Mwakhawa, president of the Law Society of Malawi, is convinced some members of Cabinet tried to stop Banda from taking over, even though Malawi's constitution makes it clear power should pass to the vice president if the president dies.
"Most Malawians wanted the constitution to prevail. The security forces wanted the constitution to prevail. And the constitution has prevailed," Mwakhawa said in an interview.
Under the constitution, Banda will serve out Mutharika's term, which ends in early 2014. Mutharika first won office in 2004, and was re-elected in 2009.
Doctors, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters, said the 78-year-old Mutharika died Thursday, before his body was flown to South Africa. Taking the body to South Africa was apparently done to buy time for politicians to work out a succession plan.
Local and international media had carried reports of his death since Thursday, and Malawians had furiously discussed it among themselves and on social media platforms.
When Mutharika first came to power, he was backed by his predecessor, Bakili Muluzi. A feud ensued after Mutharika had Muluzi charged with corruption and fraud. Mutharika left the ruling party to establish his own. Political bickering between the two men led to extensive legislative delays, rioting, a failed impeachment bid, and accusations of coup and assassination plots.
John Kapito, chairman of the Malawi Human Rights Commission, said more bickering could lie ahead. Men who had gained power under Mutharika may not give it up without a political fight. Among them is Mutharika's brother, Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Arthur Mutharika. President Mutharika had favored his brother after clashing with Banda, naming him as acting president when he traveled. The president did not have time to consolidate the succession before his heart attack, an event that took many by surprise.
The late president's party named his brother as its president on Friday, though it did not then confirm the president had died.
"She will be tested," Kapito said of Malawi's first female president.
Banda, 62, takes over a country in which shortages of sugar, fuel and other commodities have created long, restive lines at shops and service stations.
Mutharika, a former World Bank official once heralded for his economic stewardship, had in recent years been accused of mismanagement and of trampling on human rights.
Anti-government demonstrations across Malawi last year were met with an unprecedented security crackdown that resulted in at least 19 deaths.
Last month, a U.S. aid agency that rewards good governance suspended $350 million worth of assistance to Malawi. The International Monetary Fund describes its program with Malawi as "off-track." Mutharika had ignored IMF advice to devalue the country's currency.
Kapito, the human rights activists, said he hoped Malawians and foreign donors will rally around Banda, wife of a retired chief justice.
Mwakhawa, of the law society, said Banda "was one of the people who advocated for adherence to the rule of law and sound economic policies while she was an estranged vice president. We expect her to practice what she's preached."
"Life President" Hastings Kamuzu Banda led Malawi to independence from Britain, only to impose an oppressive rule from 1963 to 1994. Whims that reflected his puritanical streak were law. The U.S.-trained physician and former Presbyterian church elder always attired in a dark suit and Homburg hat, banned women from wearing pants and short skirts, and banned long hair on men.
Joyce Banda, who is not related to the dictator, recently joined protest marches in this still conservative country in support of women's right to dress as they please.
Hastings Kamuzu Banda lost power in the country's first multiparty election in 1994 and died three years later.

An article over at the Atlantic web site describes the original purpose of diamond engagement ring: ?A now-obsolete law called the ?Breach of Promise to Marry? once allowed women to sue men for breaking off an engagement. Back then, there was a high premium on women being virgins when they married ? or at least when they got engaged. Surveys from the 1940s show that roughly half of engaged couples reported being intimate before the big day. If the groom-to-be walked out after he and the bride-to-be had sex, that left her in a precarious position. From a social angle, she had been permanently ?damaged.? From an economic angle, she had lost her market value. So Breach of Promise to Marry was born.?
It didn?t last. ?Women eventually lost the right to sue for broken engagements: ?By 1945, 16 states representing nearly half of the nation?s population had made Breach of Promise a historical relic. At the same time, the diamond engagement ring began its transformation from decorative to de rigueur. Legal scholar Margaret Brinig?doesn?t think that?s a coincidence, and she has the math to prove it. Regressing the percent of people living in states without Breach of Promise against a handful of other variables ? including advertising, per capita income and the price of diamonds ? Brinig found that this legal change was actually the?most?significant factor in the rise of the diamond engagement ring. It?s historically plausible. The initial mini-surge in diamond imports came in 1935, four years before DeBeers launched its celebrated advertising campaign.? ?This throws light on what has become an etiquette question: ?should a jilted bride give back the engagement ring? Today, the answer is often yes. But back when rings first came into vogue, part of the point was that she wouldn?t. It was a security against a default on the engagement.?
Of course, the article ends with a celebratory summary of the progress we?ve made since the old days. ?Premarital sex is no longer taboo. ?Women have their own careers and their own money. And men can make and break promises at a whom. ?Now that?s progress.
