Growth hormone tied to higher eye pressure in kids ... - Health Centers

? Eye / Vision Problems ? Jul 06, 2012

Short children treated with growth hormone may have slightly increased eye pressure compared with children not on the therapy, according to a small study from Israel.

High eye pressure has been linked to glaucoma, a disease that may lead to blindness. But experts said the new findings shouldn?t cause alarm, because eye pressure in the study was still within the normal range.

Hormone injections are a common way to treat conditions that stunt growth, from hormonal deficiencies to genetic diseases like Turner and Prader-Willi syndromes.

Growth hormone is generally considered safe, and although the new study raises a red flag, its significance is unclear.

"This is a very preliminary study that from my point of view only tells us that this is something we should look into,? said Dr. Ilan Youngster at Tel Aviv University in Israel, whose results were published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

Previous research has found side effects - including headache, nausea and joint inflammation - in fewer than 5 percent of children treated with growth hormone.

One case report also describes a boy who developed severe glaucoma that eased when he was taken off growth hormone. Glaucoma is a group of conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually from a buildup of pressure in the eye. So the Israeli team wanted to test whether growth hormone treatment might be tied to eye pressure changes.

Youngster and his colleagues studied 55 kids who had been getting growth hormone treatment for 31 months on average. They compared those with 24 children with similar conditions who had not been treated.

Kids with eye diseases or those who had a family history of eye problems were excluded from the study.

The children in the treatment group, aged around 11 years on average, were getting daily shots of growth hormone - within the standard dose range, but about 50 percent higher than the dose used to replace the hormone in deficient kids.

Eye pressure in the treated kids was about 16 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), on average, compared to 13 mm Hg in the untreated group. Higher doses and longer treatment periods were linked to greater pressure.

The researchers also checked their findings against children of the same age in the general population. Again, they found that those on hormone therapy had higher eye pressure.

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, a non-profit research organization, eye pressure in the range of 12-22 mm Hg is considered normal.

Youngster said a follow-up study is already underway, with tests at three, four and five years of treatment.

?That?s the better study to see the change in pressure over time,? he said.

Dr. Steven Chernausek, who studies the safety of growth hormone in children at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, said it?s possible that eye pressure may drop after kids stop taking growth hormone.

?That?s a missing but key piece of information,? Chernausek, who wasn?t involved in the new work, told Reuters Health.

?We also don?t know what the long-term effects of growth hormone use are. Most studies look at side effects during the time of treatment. Very few studies look at the effect 20 years later,? he said.

Based on the new findings, Chernausek sees little cause for concern, however. He said screening all kids on growth hormone for high eye pressure is not warranted at this point.

Youngster agreed. For now, he recommends regular monitoring only for kids with a family history of glaucoma.

Treatment with Recombinant Human Growth Hormone during Childhood is Associated with Increased Intraocular Pressure

Conclusion
IOP in children treated with rhGH is increased compared with a similar population without treatment and compared with healthy population normograms. IOP is associated with longer treatment duration and higher dosages.

The New Elegant Black Woman: The Great Self-Improvement Debate

You may have noticed some of the negative critiques of my blog and goal to become an EBW. You may have experienced similar negative comments if you are attempting to become more feminine or undertaking any self-improvement journey. I thought it would be useful to myself and hopefully others to present a series of arguments for and against my goals. This will not only help me fully understand and accept my reasons for doing this but it will also demonstrate that I can see the points of those who are critical. The first installment will be The Great Self-Improvement Debate!

Every individual is unique and the way they view the world and others depends on so many factors including: genetics, place of origin, early childhood and lifelong experiences, parent and community socialization (e.g., teaching how to be the ideal member of a gender or "race"), culturally-transmitted views, religion, current events, media consumption, education, intelligence, personality, mental health, career choice, socio-economic status (SES), friends, and individual preferences. I'm sure there are other factors but that is a long list of things that can result in two people reading, seeing, or hearing the same thing and having completely different reactions!

I think that the ideal woman is understanding, compassionate, caring, intelligent, patient, and a good communicator and these traits require that she accepts that all of these variables may influence her reactions and those of others. This means that given an individual's variables (e.g., place of origin, SES, parent socialization etc.) it is understandable that the person thinks the way they do. It is therefore unwise (and just mean) to label someone as stupid, wrong, part of the problem, a traitor, lost, confused, inferior and other ad?hominem attacks?just because they think a certain way. Given their circumstances their thinking makes sense and will appear "correct" to most people with the same circumstances!

Attacking a person's character based on their opinions or preferences is not only illogical but it makes you an unpleasant person to be around! Others will limit their communication with you if you have a bad habit of calling them names, putting them down, and using ad hominem attacks when they state their views and preferences. A more ladylike thing to do is listen, state your agreement or disagreement based on the topic of discussion, keep your composure, and refrain from insulting the person's character. You may agree or disagree with the person at the moment, but changes in your circumstances (e.g., learning a great deal, living in another country) may result in you flip-flopping and agreeing with something you were once vehemently against! That is fine because it makes no sense to continue believing the same thing after learning new information that changes the situation.

I see most things as being shades of grey not either black or white and most things are neither entirely right or absolutely wrong. Many people are VERY uncomfortable with this uncertainty and are only able to use dichotomous thinking. What's perfect in some situations is inappropriate in others, what you love today you may hate tomorrow, the best solution may be the hardest, the worst solution may be the most acceptable to others and so on. So I think that for myself and others who see the value of becoming an EBW it is important to consider that your opinions and preferences may appear logical and healthy to some but irrational and harmful to others. Therefore don't become weighed down by that possibility and instead focus on whether your opinions and preferences are beneficial to you and will make your life better. You will never please everyone with your opinions and preferences so don't even try but at least you can be pleased with yourself.

With that said I will present arguments for and against trying to improve oneself and a solution that may satisfy anyone who is for or against self-improvement. Certain important assumptions are made within the arguments (boldfaced) but the assumptions are not always true, there possible exceptions, and they are debatable themselves.

Pro: Why Attempting Self-Improvement is a Positive Thing

  1. Not seeking to improve oneself is settling for being mediocre. Many people are unhappy being mediocre and feel happier after they have improved. Improvement increases happiness.
  2. Those who constantly improve themselves by learning more, seeking higher education, networking with new people, looking for ways to earn more money, seeking promotions and career advancement, learning to cope better with their's problems and shortcomings, learning how to improve their's thinking, or learning how to improve their image tend to reap the best rewards in life.?
  3. If you want a good life you have to work for it. Resources are limited and there is competition (e.g., scholarships, good jobs, loans, desirable partners) so you have to be better than others in order to reap the best rewards.?
  4. Self-improvement involves deep introspection about one's personal goals, where one can improve, and learning many possible methods to improve and achieve those goals. High achievers, successful people, motivated people, and those who wish to improve their circumstances all go through these processes on a regular basis in order to maintain their position at the top or achieve a higher status. If one wants to be a high achiever or successful they should emulate people who have achieved that status.
  5. Low achievers, unsuccessful people, unmotivated people and those without means rarely go through the self-improvement process, do not understand it's value, may expect success and goals to be achieved without effort, expect other people to provide what they need, or believe that they have no power to improve their status. If you reject self-improvement you may stay or become a low achiever or unsuccessful person.?
  6. Individuals are opposed to the self-improvement goals of others due to personal reasons such as: beliefs the goals are unattainable; concern for others wasting their time or that the improvement will not bring happiness; fear that achieving the goal may harm the individual, the observer, or others; fears of feeling insecure or left behind if others improve; and fear that one will lose status or certain benefits if others improve. (This is an ad hominem attack so although I would not use this in a debate, one should be wary that personal reasons may be behind the opposition).
Con:?Why Attempting Self-Improvement is a Negative Thing
  1. There is no need to try to improve yourself because you are your best self right now and perfect the way you are. Someone will accept you as you are so there is no need to try to change in order to fit in, make friends, or find a partner. Trying to improve or change means you think there is something wrong with you and you are not good enough. No one is better than anyone else. You may admire someone else but that individual may be very unhappy with themselves and wish to be more like you (i.e., the grass is always greener on the other side).??
  2. Once you achieve one goal you will move on to another and never stop and just enjoy yourself and your life as it is. Especially if the improvement is something superficial (e.g., appearance, speech) then you will waste time that you could be spending doing something else?that is more important. Desire is the source of unhappiness. You may spend a lot of time and energy trying to improve but fail anyways because societal forces and luck determine success more than individual effort.
  3. Improving may bring on new problems (e.g., financial drain, lack of free time, negative attention)?that you didn't have to deal with before. You may regret the changes you made but won't be able to go back to where you were before.?
  4. People don't really change.?You are who who always will be. So trying to improve means you are trying to be someone you are not and that is being fake. Fake people are unpleasant to be around and you won't feel good about yourself. People won't really be liking you for you so your relationships will be based on a lie.
  5. The malicious influence of society makes you feel like you should change or you are not good enough. Society makes you want to conform to the majority and what those in power want, not out of concern for you, but so that the status quo remains, they maintain their power, and you spend money. It is a form of social control that is harmful to the individual. So if you try to change yourself then you are just caving in to society's pressure and allowing yourself to be unfairly manipulated and distracted from important things.
  6. People should try to be satisfied with themselves and their lives as they are now.?Happiness is in the eye of the beholder and it's your thoughts that make you unhappy not your current situation. If you could learn to think more positively about your past, present, and future then you could be happier without needing to change yourself (note that learning implies change lol).?
  7. People try to improve because they have personal issues. They are unsatisfied with themselves, have self-hate and low self-esteem, think other people are better, or they are confused about who they are. They are actually feeling sad so they set self-improvement goals in the hopes of becoming happier. People with high self-esteem accept themselves and don't feel the need to change. (These are ad hominem attacks that should not be used in debates but for some people they may be true but not for others).?
Solution
My solution to this debate is a blend of considerations based on all of these arguments and I consider both sides. However, I am more partial to the Pro side probably due to personal reasons. For instance, the Pro side fits with my educational teachings, I believe more that effort and hard work can achieve things despite luck or privilege, I believe that I have power and control over my life, I have achieved a lot so I expect that I can achieve more and be successful, the people I know have improved their lives, I don't feel pressure offline in Canada not to improve, and I don't see much harm in my goals. I believe people are constantly changing, I think that people may be sure of their preferences and opinions but never fully understand why they developed them (i.e., one never really knows oneself), and we are always conforming to something, even the attitude that one should never conform. My solution or mental resolution is the following:

Accept yourself as you are now, forgive your shortcomings, and realize that there are great things about you just the way you are. Also accept that you have personal power to improve your life and there is nothing wrong with doing so. Every experience changes parts of us while others stay the same. Success may be due to luck or hard work. You may feel societal pressure to do some things, but not others, and actually not mind conforming and that is okay. Everything you do does not have to be a form of protest and sometimes what the masses do and like can be quite satisfying and beneficial (otherwise no one would accept it). The old you and the new you may be different but you can accept them both as parts of who you are. Your identity does not change so no matter what, YOU will always be YOU, so there is no need to resist trying new things or doing things differently. What you like, how you look, what you think, and how you behave may constantly change but YOU will always be YOU. No one is entirely good or bad, self-loving or self-hating, successful or unsuccessful so whatever you do, own it, accept it, and try to find happiness however you can :)

Should the Kentucky Constitution be amended to authorize cities to ...

George Myers,?LFUCG Eighth District councilmember:

Government should continuously evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of its spending habits, particularly when considering raising revenue. However, it is clear that the Commonwealth?s Constitution severely restricts the ability of local communities to fund projects critical to remaining competitive.

In order for the Commonwealth to enhance its competitive advantage, drive economic development and create jobs, its citizens need to have some level of self-determination. Amending the state constitution to allow a local option sales tax will empower communities to prioritize and finance local projects that once completed, will enhance Kentucky?s position as a destination state and increase shared revenues.

San Antonio and Oklahoma City are reaping the benefits from a more decentralized state tax structure that has allowed for dozens of citizen-driven projects, funded by local option sales tax. These benchmark cities have raised and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in developing river walks, ballparks, trails, civic centers and music halls along with community health and education initiatives, just to name a few. These investments have created new jobs and revenue streams, while increasing tourism and enhancing the quality of life.

Kentucky?s current tax structure is one of the nation?s most centralized and lacks local input. This, in turn, hampers the ability to effectively govern and respond to local needs. It is estimated Lexington could capture $50 million annually through a one-percent sales tax in a normal year (absent an event such as the 2010 World Equestrian Games).

What are the opportunity costs of not acting within the next General Assembly?s legislative session? Changing our state constitution to empower our communities to enact a local option sales tax will drive economic development and job creation, while fostering an environment in which the rising tide raises all ships. If not now, then when? If not this, then what?

?

Jon Steiner,?executive director/CEO of the Kentucky?League of Cities:?

Imagine a business in today?s economy trying to succeed using only the tools available 100 years ago. Unfortunately, this time-warp is a reality for Kentucky cities. The Kentucky Constitution limits cities to the same revenue sources and tax scheme that existed in 1891. In many cities, these tax options are maxed out and do not offer the flexibility necessary to fit community needs; moreover, the antiquated model forces the burden almost entirely on local residents and businesses.

Cities must have the flexibility to respond to an evolving economy, and a constitutional amendment would provide cities the tools they need to tailor local taxes to leverage a community?s strengths. A constitutional amendment is the only path forward to enable cities to undertake the kind of investments needed to improve the quality of life of Kentuckians for generations to come.

What could be more democratic than authorizing citizens to vote on how to pay for projects and programs in their own communities? Lexington?s business leaders have seen first-hand the positive impact of such local decision-making in San Antonio and in Oklahoma City. The use of local option sales taxes created wholesale change in the quality of life in these communities. A river-walk, state-of-the-art convention centers, libraries, parks, office and commercial development and a stadium have created tourist magnets, which have spurred thriving business environments and shifted much of the tax burden away from locals.

Alas, Kentucky is one of only 14 states ? and the only state in the Southeast ? that does not allow at least some use of a local option sales tax. A change in Kentucky is long overdue. Let communities and their residents make local decisions at the local level to bring their visions for the future to life before we get left in the 19th century.

?

Rep. Bill Farmer,?R-Lexington (88th District):?

Authorizing a local sales tax for municipalities is in some ways like getting a new credit card. It?s exciting to think about all the things you can buy with that new line of credit ? until the bill comes.

Kentucky is not a referendum state, and those that are, like California and Ohio, have dealt with tremendous budget deficits. While I certainly understand there are times that cities must replace or renovate facilities and need funding to do so, allowing local sales tax referendums is not the way to go about it. If we allowed a one percent increase in a local sales tax, who is to say that a few years down the road that same city would want another increase of one or two percent?

Governments at all levels face the same problems that families face on a regular basis: knowing the difference between wants and needs. If the roof needs to be replaced, that expense should take priority over your desire for a nice vacation. Cities must be prepared to make similar decisions based on their own individual circumstances.

Finally, if there is a new source of tax dollars from a sales tax, there is always the risk of people forgetting the intended purpose. Sure, the current mayor may recognize those dollars are for Project X, but a few years down the road, the purpose for those dollars is forgotten and they turn into general fund dollars that are allocated along with property taxes and occupational taxes.

?

Jamie Clark,?geothermal sales at Arronco comfort air:?

Lexington can no longer be a fiscal island. I believe Kentucky should amend our constitution to allow local governments to enact a sales tax because our current payroll-based tax system puts Fayette County at a disadvantage and forces our citizens to pay more than our fair share of taxes. Because local governments are not allowed to tax based on consumption, such as a sales tax, they are forced to add creative taxes by way of franchise fees for utilities, fees on your cell phone and Internet, and even additional taxes on your home and auto insurance. All of these taxes (you can call it a fee all you want to, but it?s still a tax) add to quite a load on the backs of Fayette County citizens. We alone are paying for services like streets and roads, police and fire departments, and even civic and social events that are being used by all of the citizens of our expanded metro area. Lexington-Fayette County is the shopping, entertainment and medical center for almost 100 miles in any direction. On any given day, especially on weekends and during UK basketball and football games, as many as 40 percent of the people in Lexington do not live or work here. A one percent sales tax would allow all of these people to contribute to our economy and to help us continue to make Lexington a great city without further burdening the citizens that live and work here. We need to embrace the fact that we are the unofficial capital of central and eastern Kentucky and work with our eastern Kentucky legislators to help us pass legislation that will allow Lexington to spread our tax burden in a manner that is fair to all.

?

Alan Stein,?founder of SteinGroup, former president?and CEO of the Lexington Legends:?

Absolutely. Our difficult economic times have, rightfully, given us pause as we as a society grapple with the questions of how to address the concept of the ?greater good.? No longer do we have the luxury of taking care of our less fortunate, investing in great new ideas or building better places to live without having a legitimate conversation about how to best use our dwindling economic resources. We are in a new age of responsible allocation of our resources: human, physical and economic. This sounds simple ? we elect folks to examine the pros and cons of how these resources will be spent and hope for ?the best.?

Unfortunately, we?re not getting ?the best? when it comes to these ?discussions.? Partisan politics and high-decibel shouting have replaced a thoughtful and sometimes compromising approach to determining what might make us better as a community. It?s time to let us, the public, decide what values we want to have available to us in the marketplace of ideas that can carry us on the path to becoming the ?great city? the overwhelming majority of us want Lexington to become. Recognizing that our current resources are indeed limited, to accomplish great things we need to at least have other options available to us. Without weighing in on WHAT we should do to become great, I?d rather see us have an informed discussion of what?s important to us and what?s not. However, without all options available to us, these sorts of discussions are mere academic exercises and nothing more than dreams and wishes.

Dreams are what make great societies, great communities and indeed, great people. Let?s demand that our local leaders, both in City Hall and in Frankfort, recognize that they can trust us, the people, to make the right decisions in moving us forward into an exciting new future. We have great dreams. Let us have the ability to make them come true, if we so choose.

?

Phil Holoubek,?president, Lexington?s real estate company:?

Yes. Citizens should certainly have the right to vote for or against a local option sales tax. Currently, we?re not given the opportunity for our voice to be heard. Additionally, we?re the most ?taxocentric? state in the country. We?re not the most heavily taxed, but we do give the largest percentage of our local tax dollars to the state level, of any state in the country.

I?m not suggesting that ALL local taxes need to be kept in the local community. But, at the very least, we shouldn?t be forced to keep the LEAST amount of local taxes in our own communities, without having a say in the matter. Certainly, we should have the right to vote whether or not to we want to generate additional local taxes and keep them in our community for capital projects.

This approach has worked well in numerous other cities, including Oklahoma City. Their incremental tax has led to improved school buildings, new parks, a new library, new sports facilities, and a much needed renovation of their downtown, including the creation of Bricktown. These projects improved quality of life and led to economic development successes, including the recruitment of corporate headquarters to their downtown. These tangible benefits are a key reason that the tax, when it has come up for renewal, has been easily approved by voters several times.

As always, full transparency and trust in local government were critical success factors, as was?the inclusion of a ?sunset clause? on the local option sales tax, which would need to be included in any proposal for Lexington.

How to Put a New Product into the Marketplace ...

It?s possible to have a successful product launch no matter what your experience or budget.

They do, however, demand some careful planning and an attention to detail. Launching a product isn?t that difficult, but it does entail many smaller tasks that must be completed on schedule. A lot of it comes down to your organizational skills, as you can?t overlook anything. Forgetting about any one aspect of the project can cause the whole thing to capsize. If you?re uncertain about any step of the process, make sure you find out the answer before moving forward. Get Him Back Forever

It might be easy for you to use certain current events to present a product that is very popular. This can done just by using the season or climate. If you have a weight loss product, then this is an excellent example. Advertising products that will get people ready for the hot months of summer is a good example of this. For anyone who has to look perfect for summer, there are plenty of products that can be sold to them. In addition to looking wonderful in their new summer clothes, you can also use tanning products in this situation. So, see if your product has this type of advantage. There are only a few things that work better than the internet crowding anticipating a new online product. It does not matter why everyone is waiting for it. You have to have a specific audience in order for this strategy to work. The easiest way to create a buzz is by making a video and you have a lot of options for this. Just try not to produce a video that brings a lot of negative publicity. What you will need to do is find something about your product that can be positioned as spectacular in some way. You should not exaggerate about this or you will not get a good response. more info

Even if you don?t have a big advertising budget, you can recruit affiliates to do much of the selling for you. During the product launch, you may want to get the attention of affiliates with higher than normal commissions. A bonus for selling a large number of products is another way to incentivize your offer. If you want potential affiliates to be drawn to your product, make sure you place it on a network that?s widely used by leading affiliates in the industry. You can leverage the power of IM forums to find some of the most successful affiliates. The Eighty-Twenty Rule is something that is relevant to all types of marketing, and it applies here as well. You can count on the majority of your income being generated by around twenty percent of your best affiliates. Keep in mind that when it comes to a product launch, there are never any guarantees. You?ll sometimes read in the media, for example, that a name brand product such as a car, computer or movie unexpectedly fails in the marketplace. This shouldn?t scare you off, as it?s just something you have to face when you are an entrepreneur. You can do many things to make it more likely your product will succeed, such as thoroughly researching your niche. click here

Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale

"A scale that tweets your weight? No thank you!" The biggest misconception about the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale ($159, direct)?that its signature feature is it posts your weight on Twitter, which it can do but doesn't have to?is how it miraculously landed in my hands for testing. No one else at PCMag was willing to risk public humiliation to try out a bathroom scale except me. And it's a shame that so much attention about the scale centers on Twitter, because the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale has one of the best displays I've ever seen. Smart and intuitive slider bars demystify body fat percent readouts. Weight, measured in imperial pounds, kilos, or even stones, appears in large, easy-to-see numbers. And the companion Web account (free) makes understanding your weight and other personal health metrics easier than ever, particular because you can send them to your doctor in a few clicks.

The Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale costs almost three times what I paid for my own non-Wi-Fi enabled bathroom scale (a Tanita BF-679W), which gives me just as much information about my weight and body fat, but doesn't automatically log and track it over time. That's the real benefit of a Wi-Fi scale, and it's a must-have feature for people who need to get a firm grasp on their fitness, diet, or overall health. For 30 bucks less, the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale ($129.95, direct, 4 tars) is nearly as good as the Withings scale, though the latter's display just can't be beat.

Design and Setup
Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale, available in navy or white, looks stylish, sleek, and sophisticated. The square glass slab has a thin profile and stands a scant 1.25 inches tall (0.9 inches, plus the scale's feet). The body measures 12.6 inches in other side. The underside contains a panel for four AAA batteries and a micro USB socket, used during setup.

Before you can use the scale, you have to set up a Web account with the usual information: email, username, and password. Then you need to download a small executable file onto your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. After that, you connect the scale to your computer using a USB cable. The software walks you through connecting the Withings scale to your Wi-Fi signal. The whole process takes about five minutes.

The Web account is where you add more details about yourself?you can import previous weight charts, for example?and set up profiles for other users. Up to eight people can use the same scale, and each user can choose whether to make his or her information visible to other users.

When the setup is complete, just hop on the scale. The rest is automatic. Every time you weigh yourself, your weight, body fat percent, and body mass index (BMI) are logged in your Web account.

Withings Scale and Web Account Use
Every time you log in, the website shares tips and information about fat, lean mass, and other metrics the site records to help you better understand what they mean and why they're important. You can suppress the tips, but I found them surprisingly informative and presented in an educated way. It's rich information about personal health, not pop magazine tips for a flatter tummy in six weeks.

The scale itself is remarkably intuitive. Step on and it works, with no need to wake it up first. Withings' display is one of the best I've seen on a home bathroom scale. The scale indicates, visually, when it's busy calculating or sending information, the same way the Fitbit Aria scale does. It shows three main readouts, weight, fat percent, and BMI, but also includes a small bar below the number pointing to your point on that scale. The healthy range for your height, age, and sex appears highlighted. If the pointer hits within the highlighted area, you know you're relatively on target. The display demystifies all the numbers and percentiles that can otherwise be confusing to someone without much medical knowledge.

Another smart and intuitive feature in this scale is how it handles uncertainty regarding which user steps on it. If you have two users with similar metrics, the Withings scale may not know one from the other. So it asks by showing the two users' initials on the display, one to the left and one to the right, and flashing a foot icon above each. Stand on just your left foot to tell it you're the person on the left. That's pretty neat.

As much as the website has great customization options and loads of features, I encountered a few oddities and annoyances while trying to manipulate some of them. For example, to log in, you have to click through two or three pages before you actually reach the page with your stats, a minor nuisance.?

Configuring objectives, like "lose four pounds" or "decrease fat by 2 percent," didn't work the way I expected. When I opened the objective panel and typed in a target weight and hit Enter, the app changed the number to a different one, which I did not understand in the slightest. The same thing happened when I tried to set a target for fat percent. Hitting Enter radically changed the number I entered. Rather than risk messing up my account, I hit Cancel. Considering how effortlessly the rest of the scale works, I was surprised to feel I needed a long sit-down with a user manual for this section.

Interconnectivity and Sharing
Another awesome benefit of the Withings scale is that it can connect to an enormous array of other devices, apps, and health programs. It supports one of my favorite gadgets, the Fitbit Ultra ($99, 4 stars) and all its collected data from the Fitbit website. Withings also works with the weight management app Lose It! (free, 3.5 stars), health monitoring app Digifit (free to download, add-ons extra, 3 stars), the runner's app RunKeeper, and plenty of others. Withings also makes a blood pressure measuring device, which you can sync with your account as well.?

The options for sharing your Withings data are comprehensive. If peer pressure motivates you, you can have the scale tweet your weight daily, weekly, or after each weigh-in. You can also have your status published on a website, like a personal blog, shared via Facebook, or even sent directly to your doctor.

If your GP has a Withings account, she or he can access all your data directly through the site. Without an account, doctors (or anyone for that matter) can receive a one-time report via email. If you arrive at a medical appointment and the doctor asks if you've had any changes in your weight and blood pressure, you can log into the site and send the GP all that information in one shot.

Super Scale
Although it's quite expensive, the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale packs a lot of value, particularly due to its companion website and ability to interconnect with other apps and fitness devices. That earns it our Editors' Choice. The Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi scale is very nearly as good and costs a bit less, but doesn't give you that gorgeous and intuitive readout display.

No Gay Wedding For Green Lantern

When Alan Scott popped the question to his boyfriend Sam in Earth 2 #2, many fans wondered if DC Comics would soon be following in the footsteps of Archie Comics and Marvel Comics. But alas, it looks like a gay wedding isn?t in the cards for Earth 2?s Green Lantern, at least not anytime soon.

If you haven?t already read Earth 2 #3, then be warned that spoilers follow (but these spoilers were already revealed anyway in DC Comics official preview for the issue). On the second to last page of Earth 2 #2, Alan Scott pulled out a ring and told Sam, ?I love you, Sam. I?m crazy about you. Marry me so we can?? But before Sam could give an answer, the next page showed the bullet train they were riding on exploding and careening off it?s tracks.

Well, it?s no surprise that Alan Scott survived the fiery scene, but what about his boyfriend Sam? And if Sam survived, what would his answer be to Alan? It turns out we will never know if Sam would have said yes, as Earth 2 #3 reveals that Sam did not survive the crash. Of course, it is comic books, where people don?t always stay dead, so who knows what the future may hold.
