Most sports involve some level of physical risk, and Olympic contests are no exception. Although the injury rate is lower than that for some professional sports such as American football and soccer, about 10 percent of Olympians get hurt during their days at the games, either while training on site or in actual competition.

A total of 1,055 injuries were reported during the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, according to a thorough study of injury reports by Lars Engebretsen of the University of Oslo in Norway. The insults ranged from fractured feet, dislocated shoulders and ruptured Achilles tendons to less traumatic but more prevalent ankle sprains and head contusions.

Of course, the circumstances that inflicted pain varied considerably. Engebretsen found that the fraction of injuries that took place during training was highest in table tennis, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball, equestrian, modern pentathlon and athletics. Injuries most often occurred during competition in boxing (no surprise), water polo, hockey, handball, weight lifting, baseball and judo.

Although we tend to think of collisions and falls as likely culprits, overuse of an athlete's muscles or joints caused more than 40 percent of the injuries in rowing, modern pentathlon, sailing, shooting, tennis, beach volleyball, triathlon, athletics, weight lifting, swimming and badminton. Contact with another athlete did cause more than half the injuries in boxing, judo, water polo, handball, taekwondo, wrestling and soccer.

Severity varied, too, of course. Fractures were highest among taekwondo injuries (4.8 percent). The same sport also had the highest rate of dislocations or ruptures to tendons and ligaments (3.2 percent).

The Winter Olympics have fewer athletes overall, so fewer injuries were reported during the 2010 Games in Vancouver: 287. But the injury rate was 11.2 percent, a little higher than the 9.6 percent for the summer games.

The distribution of injuries varied much more widely among winter sports, too. In short-track speed skating, 28 percent of men were hurt but only 9 percent of women were. In snowboard cross, however, which involves frequent contact between boarders in a free-for-all downhill race, only 11 percent of male racers were hurt but an incredible 73 percent of female athletes were. Oddly, a surprisingly high proportion of injuries occurred during training runs, when a boarder was alone on a course, without competitors to raise the stakes. The high rate may just have been the result of fast slopes, according to Engebretsen.

Legs and arms and everything in between were compromised during the past two Olympics. But hockey players suffered by far the most facial damage, caused by flying pucks, swinging sticks and the occasional fight. Downhill skiers and snowboarders had the most head injuries. Concussions affected 7 percent of all winter athletes?twice as high as in the summer games.

Engebretsen will see how the statistics hold up in 2012. He is at the London Games, and he will be studying rates of illness as well.

Critical Information On Asbestos Exposure Issues | alljohnnydepp.com

The construction industry in its growth has made use of many kinds of materials. Asbestos is one such material that has been used for years. However the side effects of its use came to light in 1964. The material has microscopic fibers which when inhaled affect the lungs. These are the asbestos exposure symptoms. The minute dust particles from these materials are breathed in with air. After entering the lungs they affect the respiratory system causing a number of ailments.

Being exposed to this element affects the lungs. As such a number of ailments are the result of this. Typically such ailments include asbestosis lung cancer and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is the condition with a high prevalence. All these result from continued inhalation of the dust that contains the microscopic fibers. These fibers are lodged in the lungs where their deposits continue to grow. This will later affect the lung anatomy and eventually affect their proper functioning.

Construction and mining workers are at a higher risk. This is because of the nature of work that keeps then in prolonged contact with this type of material. The small dust particles get attached to their clothes and bodies. This accounts for secondary contact infections commonly experienced among their family members.

Mesothelioma is a condition associated to prolonged contact with this type of substance. The lungs are most affected because the contaminated air deposits the fibers there. Eventually the lungs get inflamed due to these deposits. Additionally the damaged lung lining results in difficult breathing and heavy coughing.

The prevalence of this condition closely relies on three factors. It is considered that a victim inclined to lung cancer has a higher chance of getting infected. Definitely the amount of material a person gets in contact with will also determine the levels of infection. While the amount of material counts on one hand the total duration of contact accounts for the third factor that dictates the pattern of infection.

From the time of contact to the manifestation of the condition is a period that can take minimally fifteen years. This makes the asbestos exposure symptoms an exceptional occurrence. The long dormant period adds to the rarity of the condition.

The effects of this poisoning are experienced after a long time. Therefore the first effects may appear fifteen to twenty five years after prolonged contact. In this sense the Mesothelioma is considered extremely rare in its occurrence. The number stood at eleven million people till 1978 from 1964 when this condition was first discovered. Generally thirty out of one million annually suffer from this condition. On treatment over twenty percent of the victims live up to five years.

How to deal with cliques at your retirement home | The Pulse of ...

?It broke my heart to hear Mom talk about feelings of rejection the first few days in her assisted-living complex,? says Cheryl. ?Mom?s voice cracked as she told me the other women were ?ugly? to her. They have cliques here, she said, and I can?t break into them.?

women eating STOUFFVILLECREEK 132 598 x 298 How to deal with cliques at your retirement home

Cheryl explains: ?We had spent the first week with Mom, getting her settled. Everything seemed perfect. All the furniture she selected to bring fit exactly as she had imagined it would. She liked her little kitchen and found her bedroom and bath comfortable. The screened-in porch overlooking the courtyard was a delight. Mom loved that she could go swimming in a heated pool and get her hair done after, right on the premises. We were all impressed with the dining room ? the food was good and elegantly served.?

Moving in was a great decision

?When we left her, she was looking forward to going to a newcomers? social. We felt relieved to see her happy and in a safe environment. All the way home, we talked about what a good decision the move was and how wonderful it would be to no longer worry about her living alone. So, when I received Mom?s call, it made me want to cry.?

Cliques just like in high school

?Evidently, when she went into the dining room alone for the first time and sat down at a table with a free chair, the women at the table coolly told her it would be okay for her to sit there now, but their friend would be returning tomorrow. She had taken his place at the table. ?

?I feel as I did when my family moved and I had to go to a new high school, Mom said. I?m too old to have to do this all over again ? walking into a room where everybody, but me, knows everybody. They?re all talking and laughing. I can?t just break in and expect to be accepted.?

Cheryl asked her mom about the newcomers? social. Hadn?t she met people there? Mom said, Not really. She was the only newcomer at the social, and the only people who talked with her were staff members.?

Going it alone

?I was especially worried when Mom told me she did not plan to use the van service to go shopping and had decided to drive herself. I knew I needed to return to see her, but couldn?t leave work until Friday, so decided to call the Resident Coordinator.?

?She told me my Mom?s experience is a common one and promised to take Mom under her wing. When I talked with Mom the next day, she had used the van to go shopping and to the bank. She also joined a church group and met a woman who will be moving into an apartment across the courtyard. We seemed to click, she said.?

Adjustments are common

Adjustment problems occur whenever your loved one?s circumstances change. Assisted living, as wonderful as it may be, represents a major change. Expect a new set of challenges, and you won?t be disappointed.

Warmly,

Dr. Amy

Earnings Preview: Amazon 2Q revenue likely strong

NEW YORK (AP) ? Amazon.com is expected to post sharply higher revenue when it reports second-quarter results Thursday after the market closes, but its investments in new distribution facilities may weigh on the online retailer.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Because Amazon's revenue has been strong, investors are likely to focus on the company's profit margins and bottom line. The company has been reinvesting a lot of its earnings to build up a distribution network so that it can better grow its business over the long term.

The effects of the weak economy in Europe on sales will also be a focus. In addition, looming sales tax requirements, a slowdown in Kindle Fire shipments ahead of the launch of a new version and rising costs for acquiring content should "warrant some caution" regarding Amazon's results, said Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

Amazon.com Inc. only collects sales tax from residents of Kentucky, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Washington and has said that it wants Congress, not individual states, to resolve the issue of whether it is required to do so.

WHY IT MATTERS: As the world's largest online retailer, Amazon's results can provide a glimpse into the mood of consumers, which power 70 percent of all growth in the U.S. economy. In general, online retailers have been weathering the shaky economy better than their brick-and-mortar counterparts, as eBay Inc.'s strong second-quarter results showed last week.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts, on average, are expecting earnings of 1 cent per share on revenue of $12.92 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

Amazon said in April it expects revenue to grow between 20 percent and 34 percent, or to between $11.9 billion and $13.3 billion.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Amazon earned $191 million, or 41 cents per share, on revenue of $9.91 billion.

Weekly Market Wrap and 10 PACE Stocks Yielding 4 ... - Jay Peroni

Weekly Wrap Up July 20, 2012

Europe finally took a backseat this week, as investors keyed in on Ben Bernanke?s testimony before Congress. The Fed chief didn?t offer any new insight about the economy or QE3, but company earnings reports gave investors more info to chew on.? Second quarter earnings season is now in session. We?ve been seeing flags of caution from many of the blue chip bellwether stocks.

All eyes on Bernanke

Fed chief Ben Bernanke continued to be frustrated by the lack of economic progress, especially with unemployment. He sees further job weakness going forward as the U.S. recovery has been hampered by:

  • Tight credit conditions
  • Uncertainty with the fiscal cliff of 2013 looming
  • The European markets and economy remain under significant stress and could unravel at any moment
  • Business spending ?appears to have decelerated? and surveys ?suggest further weakness ahead.?

Bernanke expects the economy to ?pick up very gradually? and the Fed?s is prepared to take action.? However, no hints were left that the Fed might be ready to pull the trigger on QE3 at the end of the month.

  • Bernanke expressed deep concern about the economy, reviving talk the Fed would eventually embark on new stimulus.
  • I believe Bernanke is waiting for a catastrophic event such as a full-blown European crisis before embarking on another round of easing.? Especially when they have been able to keep the stock market propped up simply by speaking to the public.

Earnings Beat the Street but Revenues Disappoint

As of July 19th, 66% of companies that have reported earnings have topped Wall Street expectations, but only 42% have beat revenue goals.? Economic challenges and stronger dollar have played a key role. Companies have been able to ?cost-cut? their way to better earnings, but this will not produce higher revenues.

Consumers Still ?Not Buying? this Recovery

Waning consumer confidence, weak employment growth, and slow income growth are all impacting the nation?s retailers as retail sales fell for the third straight month.? Sales were off 0.5% in June and this marked the first time since 2008 where we have seen sales fall for three consecutive months. This will probably force economists to ratchet down their Q2 GDP forecasts.? Remember, consumer spending makes up 70% of GDP!

More Gloom?

The closely watched Philly Fed Business Activity Index held below zero for the third straight month, rising to -12.9 in July from -16.6 in June.

Also, weekly jobless claims jumped 34,000 in the latest week to 386,000.

Housing Mixed!

Housing starts ?were up 6.9% in June, including a 4.7% rise in single-family starts. But existing-home sales slipped a worse-than-forecast 5.4% in June.

Lower Oil Prices Helped Improve the Inflation Picture (For Now)

CPI held steady at a year-over-year rate of 1.7% for June. The core rate of inflation, which pulls out food and energy, dropped slightly to 2.2%. With the economy slowing, inflation (other than food and energy) has not been much of a problem.? However, oil is quite volatile and prices are rising again amid Mideast tensions. Oil had slipped as low as $77.72 per barrel back on June 28. But is now back above $90 a barrel. Since oil bottomed, the S&P Energy sector is the winner, up 6.5%. As far as food prices go, the drought and surging corn prices could soon show up in higher grocery bills.

Busy Week Next Week

Earnings are off to a fairly good start, but will the trend continue? We have a whole slew of reports this week including:

  • Monday: Halliburton (NYSE: HAL), Eaton (NYSE: ETN), McDonalds (NYSE: MCD), and Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN)
  • Tuesday: Illinois Tool (NYSE: ITW), AT&T (NYSE: T), EMC (NYSE: EMC), UPS (NYSE: UPS), and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL).
  • Wednesday: Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) and Ford (NYSE:F)
  • Thursday: 3M (NYSE: MMM), Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM), Facebook (NYSE: FB).
  • Friday: Chevron (CHV)

The ones I will be watching closely include:

  • Caterpillar? The construction maker typically offers plenty of economic commentary, both in the U.S. and around the globe.
  • Eaton (NYSE: ETN) and Illinois Tool (NYSE: ITW): I want to see how a rising dollar is affecting some of the manufacturers? earnings.
  • Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL): How will earnings look?? This company has been pretty immune from the economic downturn.? Can the trend continue?
  • Facebook (NYSE: FB): Will investors finally catch a break?? Will Facebook provide some good news to make up for the disappointing stock performance?

Colo. shootings prompt campaigns to scuttle plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The deadly shootings at a movie theater in Colorado have briefly silenced the presidential campaign, prompting both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to cut short their schedules and pull advertising in the state out of respect for the victims and their families.

Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shootings in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.

The killing rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.

Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shootings occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shootings served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."

"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."

"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.

Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shootings could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue that has played a minor role so far.

As a senator, Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."

Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.

But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.

"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.

"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

International Affairs Budget

Development and Diplomacy Key to Job Creation, Economic Growth

Washington, DC ? Over 50 of America?s top business leaders sent a letter to every Member of Congress today urging support for a strong and effective International Affairs Budget. ?The business leaders make clear U.S. investments in development and diplomacy are just smart business and a key to opening new markets for American goods and services and to creating jobs here at home.

?As business leaders, we know that U.S. economic growth is linked with global trade and the world?s economy like never before,? reads the letter.? ?The trade and export promotion programs funded by the International Affairs Budget are essential to expanding U.S. activity in new and emerging markets.?

Signed by leaders representing a diverse range of businesses including Boeing, Coca-Cola, Google, Microsoft, PepsiCo, and Walmart, the letter also calls for the public and private sectors to work together to achieve economic growth and create U.S. jobs, saying, ?One of the best ways to do this is through our development and diplomacy programs.?

?We live in a global economy, and for American businesses to stay competitive and reach the 95 percent of consumers who live outside the U.S., we have to be actively engaged in the world,? said Thomas J. Donohue, President and CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.? ?The International Affairs budget plays a vital enabling role for U.S. companies to tap foreign markets and create jobs and prosperity at home.?

Programs funded by the International Affairs Budget open new markets for American goods and services, and support American small businesses as they work to export their products overseas. Currently, one in five American jobs depends on exports, and over half of exports already go to developing countries.? Expanding these markets through international affairs programs is essential to American competitiveness and job creation.
