(AP) ? Singer Scott McKenzie, who performed "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" ? which became a hit in 1967 during the city's "Summer of Love" ? has died.

A statement on McKenzie's website says the 73-year-old died on Saturday in Los Angeles. McKenzie battled Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system, and had been in and out of the hospital since 2010.

"San Francisco" was written by John Phillips, the leader of the 1960s group The Mamas and the Papas. But McKenzie sang it and it has stood as an anthem for the 1960s counterculture movement.

McKenzie also co-wrote "Kokomo," a No. 1 hit for The Beach Boys in 1988, and toured with The Mamas and the Papas in the 1990s.

Pen State hosts Ohio in first game of season

Pen State Nittany Lions vs. Ohio Bobcats
12:00 PM ET, September 1, 2012
Coverage: ESPN/ESPN 3D

Finally able to suite up and forget the whole offseason mess, Penn State plays host to the Ohio Bobcats to kick their season off, now not only will this season be one of the most difficult that Penn State has ever had to play through, on the other hand I would not want to be part of that Ohio team, I see Penn simply mauling them, they are going to want to not only prove to themselves and their fans that they are back, but they are going to send a message that this team and school will not go into the night quietly. I have Penn State winning this game by way of blow out even without the players they have potentially lost, by at least 3 touchdowns.

The Pen State Nittany Lions have been through so much this offseason with all the scandals, which they must be feeling very hopeless as football players, but on the field, things change and they will be looking to get all that anxiety and stress out. They have lost their leading rusher from last year, but that only means that they will have a new leader this year, most of the team has remained united and they have set in motion one of the biggest anticipated NCAA regular season football game in recent years. It will be nationally televised and give them the opportunity to show off what they have in store for this season.

The Ohio Bobcats are looking forward to getting a start to their season, but I can guarantee you that they will not be looking forward to this game, they know that this will not be a regular game, Penn State will come at them like if it was to win the national championship game and they will have to bring their A game to stand up tale, their defense will be key and for a team that ranked 41st against the pass and 32nd against the run last year, leaves a lot of run to get better. Ohio will look to slow the game down and take the crowd out of it, but still will be one of the most difficult games of the year for them.

Prince Philip to miss church after health scare

Queen Elizabeth II was to attend a church service near Balmoral on Sunday without her husband Prince Philip by her side as he remains in hospital for a fifth day.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 91, continues to receive treatment at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for a recurring bladder infection which forced him to miss part of the June celebrations for his wife's diamond jubilee.

The prince was taken to hospital by ambulance on Wednesday while he and the queen were on their annual summer visit to the family's Balmoral residence in northeast Scotland.

Members of the royal family, including the queen, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, were expected to attend a service at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral, on Sunday morning.

Doctors have told Prince Philip to rest and he has not received any visitors but is thought to have been in contact with family members by telephone.

It is unclear when he will be discharged, though Buckingham Palace said last week that he was responding well to treatment.

This is the prince's third health scare in eight months, after he suffered a blocked coronary artery over Christmas 2011 which required the insertion of a stent, or mesh tube used to strengthen or widen an artery.

But he had appeared in good health on Monday as he carried out public engagements on the Isle of Wight, and had previously attended several events at the London Olympics, including the opening ceremony and boxing matches.

The prince's current illness is the recurrence of a bladder infection that forced him to spend five nights in hospital in June and miss key events in the queen's diamond jubilee celebrations marking her 60 years on the throne.

It is not known whether the prince will be well enough for his next official engagement -- accompanying the queen to the opening of the London 2012 Paralympic Games on August 29.

UN names new envoy as Syria forces pound Aleppo

Syrian forces pounded rebel hubs in Aleppo and battled opposition fighters around Damascus, activists said, as the UN named a new envoy to try to end the conflict.

The United Nations announced Friday that veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi would take over as international envoy from Kofi Annan, who quit earlier this month.

In his first comments, Brahimi admitted he was not confident he would be able to end the 17-month-old conflict.

"I might very well fail but we sometimes are lucky and we can get a breakthrough," the 78-year-old diplomat told the BBC. But "these missions have to be undertaken. We have got to try. We have got to see that the Syrian people are not abandoned".

Within Syria, violence was also reported in other towns and villages across the country with the bloodletting showing no sign of any let-up a day after the United Nations formally declared an end to its observer mission.

"The violence and the suffering in Syria must come to an end," UN chief Ban Ki-moon said in a statement announcing Brahimi's appointment.

Ban called on the international community to give the new envoy "strong, clear and unified" support, after Annan complained that his mission had been hamstrung by the deep rift on the UN Security Council between the West and traditional Damascus allies Beijing and Moscow.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton endorsed Brahimi, as the White House asked for answers from the United Nations on his mandate.

Clinton said in a statement the international community "remains fully committed" to bringing about change in Syria and "ensuring that those who commit atrocities will be identified and held accountable".

"My message to Special Envoy Brahimi is simple: The United States stands ready to support you and secure a lasting peace that upholds the legitimate aspirations for a representative government of the people of Syria," she said.

"And to the Syrian people: you are not alone."

Junior British foreign minister Alistair Burt said London "fully supports" Brahimi's appointment, welcoming the "vast experience" he brought to the role.

On the ground, at least 72 people were killed as the regime continued its onslaught on Friday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a watchdog which has a network of activists inside the country.

The army clashed with rebels near the main military airport in Damascus and shelled southern parts of the capital as well as areas of the commercial city of Aleppo and the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, the Observatory said.

Deadly violence was also reported in the provinces of Homs and Daraa, the cradle of the uprising that began with peaceful protests in March 2011 but has escalated into an increasingly vicious battle between armed rebels and government forces.

Opposition factions reported that 65 bodies had been found dumped on a rubbish tip in a town near Damascus, claiming the victims had been bound, executed and set on fire by pro-government forces.

It is impossible to independently verify such claims as journalists are unable to report freely in Syria.

With the international community still deeply divided over how to end the conflict, the UN said the number of Syrians seeking refuge in neighbouring countries had soared to at least 170,000.

"There has been a further sharp rise in the number of Syrians fleeing to Turkey," the UN refugee agency said.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius called for President Bashar al-Assad's regime to be "smashed fast" as he visited the largest of the refugee camps in Turkey.

"After hearing the refugees and their account of the massacres of the regime, Mr Bashar al-Assad doesn't deserve to be on this earth," Fabius said.

But Russia rejected a proposal to set up no-fly zones to help fleeing civilians after the United States said it was ready to consider the move.

"You have to solve citizen security issues using methods put in practice by international humanitarian law," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Sky News Arabia.

"But if you try to create no-fly zones and safety zones for military purposes by citing an international crisis -- this is unacceptable," he said.

More than 23,000 people have died since the revolt against Assad's iron-fisted rule broke out, according to activists, while the UN puts the toll at around 17,000.

Assad has described the conflict as a battle against a foreign "terrorist" plot aided by the West and its allies in the region.

But his minority Alawite-led regime has faced a string of high-level defections, including by prime minister Riad Hijab and senior general Manaf Tlass, and a bomb attack that killed four security chiefs.

"It is clear that both sides have chosen the path of war... and the space for political dialogue and cessation of hostilities and mediation is very reduced at this point," UN assistant secretary general for peacekeeping Edmond Mulet said.

In a damning report this week, a UN panel said government forces and their militia allies had committed crimes against humanity including murder and torture, while also accusing the rebels of war crimes, but to a lesser extent.

As the two sides become more entrenched in Syria, there are fears the conflict could spread further afield, after mass kidnappings in Lebanon in retaliation for events across the border.

The US warned that its nationals face increased threats in Lebanon, including the possibility of targeted kidnappings or terrorist attacks, after several Arab states in the Gulf ordered their nationals to leave.

GameStop's cloud streaming will spurn consoles, hang with PCs, tabs and TVs only

When GameStop bought Spawn Labs, it was clear that some sort of cloud-based game streaming was on deck, to compete with the likes of Sony's Gaikai and Onlive (now allied with Ouya). However, the company has just announced that the service will exclude consoles, and work only on tablets, PCs and internet enabled TVs -- a change from the original plan. The decision was made "based on consumer feedback" after a private beta, according to the retailer, who hinted earlier that consoles may be a non-starter on the service. It also cited its "success in selling mobile devices, and the imminent launch of new consoles" to justify the change. The program's launch is still planned for next year, but for now the console streaming path is clear for others.

Immigrants confront author of anti-immigrant laws

Bob Miller/for NBC News

Isela Meraz and Fernando Lopez lead a group of undocumented Hispanics in protest against anti-immigration laws during a briefing on the civil rights effects of state immigration law held by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in Birmingham, Ala.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Protesters opposed to strict state-level immigration laws confronted one of the key writers of such legislation as he testified at a U.S. Department of Justice civil rights hearing here on Friday.

Holding up small banners with the words "undocumented" on them, four self-proclaimed undocumented immigrants stood up one at a time to denounce the laws, interrupting the testimony being given by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who helped author the measures in Alabama and Arizona.

Kobach, who advised those states before being elected to statewide office in Kansas, and others were invited to speak about the impact of such laws by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, an independent commission of the federal government.

But the session was interrupted by protests.

"I have received a lot of discrimination. I am Maria Huerta, undocumented and without fear. I have no fear! You have to respect our rights. They are civil rights," the 65-year-old woman, originally from Mexico, cried out just before throwing the hearing agenda on the floor. "I leave it there. Keep it. You don't know how to respect human suffering."

Huerta is among a group of undocumented immigrants traveling across the country in a caravan to highlight their situation and those of others still living in the shadows. Before landing in Alabama, the ragtag caravan made stops in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Their ultimate goal is the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., where they intend to press their concerns.

Moments before Huerta spoke, another group of five women stood up and turned their backs on the commission as Kobach began his testimony. They wore shirts that spelled out "stop hate."

Emotions ran high later when protesters called Kobach, a "liar," with Mayra Rangle, 32, telling commissioners: "It's a shame you invited him and him," as she pointed to those invited to speak.

After the hearing, Kobach said the protesters had the right to voice their opinions, but the interruptions were disrespectful.

"It's inherently rude and it disrespects the American process of deliberation and careful policy making," he said. "It's really unfortunate when one side in a debate results to personal insults instead of bringing information and making a coherent point."

When asked why he didn't respond to them when challenged, he said: "I was there to respond to the panel not the protesters."

During the protest, the civil rights commissioners argued about the presence of the demonstrators, with Commissioner Todd Gaziano, a Heritage Foundation fellow, denouncing the lack of security and Commissioner Michael Yaki, of Michael Yaki Consulting, noting the demonstrators were acting in the form of non-violent protest.

Gerardo Torres, 41, a Mexican who lives in Phoenix, said after the hearing that those who wrote the immigration laws were out of touch.

"I don't think they have ever been in contact with regular people," he said. "At the end of the day, I think they just go back to their gated community. ... They are not in touch with reality."?
