Transportation: Audi developing intelligent hybrids - element14

Audi is working on a new form of ?coasting hybrid? that uses a high-power starter motor to enable the car?s engine to be turned on and off frequently during a journey.??

?

Stop-start is now a familiar fitment in modern cars but with the iHEV, Audi is proposing to take this further by switching off the engine during a car?s journey, exploiting momentum and gravity to keep a car moving forward without using fuel.??

?

audi-iHEV-01-jpg[1].jpg

?

The Intelligent Hybrid Vehicle concept is based on an Audi A7 and uses an unusual 48V electrical system, powered by a 48V lithium-ion battery stored in the boot, to drive a electric belt-drive starter motor. This spins an idled engine quickly and seamlessly back into life.?

?

The iHEV is intended to work in combination with Audi?s Predictive Efficiency Assistant. A ?pre-development? project, PEA will use information from the navigation system - including road gradient data and local speed limits - and information from road signs so that it can predict what is around the next corner and make driving suggestions to the driver that will reduce fuel consumption.?

?

For example, the PEA can calculate, using information about the car?s speed, rolling resistance and the road gradient, the point when the driver should step off the accelerator, allowing the engine to stop and the car coast up to an approaching speed restriction, so it arrives at exactly the right speed.?

?

Information about the car?s drag and rolling resistance - even when equipped with, for example, a roof box or when towing a trailer - has already been calculated in the Audi wind tunnel and are embedded in the car?s control software.?

?

PEA could also be used in conjunction with Active Cruise Control, so the car substantially controls itself on the motorway, with the engine being turned on and off and the brakes being activated by the iHEV control system. Audi engineering sources also told Autocar that, at motorway speeds on the level, the iHEV could coast for over a kilometre with the engine idled.?

?

Officially, Audi says that in tests with a iHEV A7 prototype on 38 miles of ?winding country lanes? the engine was off 28 percent of the time with just the engine idling and coasting function enabled and a remarkable 43 percent of the time with PEA activated. Audi says fuel consumption was reduced by 10 per cent and the journey time was increased by just two minutes, or three per cent.?

?

A brief drive in the A7 prototype shows it to be very quick to slip into coasting mode and impressively seamless in re-starting - a function of the powerful belt-drive starter and the ability for the engine?s internal components to be stopped in the ideal configuration for quick and smooth re-starting. Indeed, after a few minutes behind the wheel, it felt natural to stop monitoring whether the engine was on or off. The frequency of the engine cutting out also showed just how much energy is stored in momentum and how effective it is to exploit this situation.??

?

There must also be a genuine question over whether the combination of a efficient diesel engine, idling, coasting and the Predictive Efficiency Assistant is both far cheaper and just as economical as using a conventional hybrid drivetrain in an executive car of this size.

LA man cleared of shooting, freed after 19 years

By NBCLosAngeles.com and wire reports

A Los Angeles man imprisoned for 19 years for a murder he didn't commit was exonerated and set free from prison on Monday.

Cheers erupted in the courtroom as the judge exonerated John Edward Smith of a drive-by shooting in 1993, NBC's Los Angeles?affiliate NBC4?reported. Late Monday, Smith left Los Angeles Men's Central Jail.

"I'm just thankful the same system that made the error was able to find the same avenue to get me out," Smith said to a throng of reporters who met him outside the jail Monday night.

"I'm not bitter at all. That ain't gonna get me nowhere, you know. I gotta move forward," he said, according to NBC4.

When asked what he was going to do next, Smith replied: "I'm gonna go home and hug my grandmother."

Read the story on NBCLosAngeles.com

Smith, who The Associated Press described as a former gang member, was convicted of killing a man during a 1993 drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Another man survived and was the single witness to the alleged crime. Two years ago, he recanted the testimony that led to Smith's 1994 conviction for first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Smith was 18 when he went to prison. He told authorities he was at his grandmother's house with family when the shooting took place in a gang-infested area.

He said he knew nothing about the crime until his mother called to tell him about it.?

The 37-year-old was scheduled to be released on Friday, but the judge was out due to illness. But Smith was all smiles on Monday as?Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg released him after nearly two decades behind bars: "Mr. Smith, you are now free."

The ruling evoked mixed emotions from Smith's family.

"I'm happy. I'm sad. But the part of me that was in there with him, I'm free now, too," said Laura Neal, Smith's grandmother and primary caretaker.

"I was hoping and praying that before I die he will be with me again," she said.

Smith's sister, Tiana Goodman, 25, said he would be meeting nieces and nephews who were born while he was in prison. "This is a big day for our family," she said, tears running down her cheeks.?

"I'm just so happy to have my brother back. My grandma's been sick and she's been holding on so she can see my brother, so this is a really big day for our family and we're just so happy."

'Broken system'
Smith's case spurred the creation of Innocence Matters, a non-profit organization whose pro-bono legal team has been at the helm of his exoneration for three years.

"We actually became a non-profit in a hurry so that we could have him be our first client," founder and Smith's lawyer Deirdre O'Connor told NBC4 on Friday.

The only eyewitness, Landu Mvuemba -- a victim who was shot and survived -- met with Innocence Matters representatives in 2010 and immediately blurted out that he had lied at the trial, O'Connor said.

Mvuemba said police pressured him to identify Smith as the shooter. Prosecutors told the judge they now believe he lied, and Schnegg found the conviction was based on perjured testimony.?

"Within the first two minutes of the interview, Mvuemba recanted," O'Connor said. Mvuemba was 16 at the time of the shooting.

He told representatives of Innocence Matters, "The police told me they knew who did it," a defense motion stated.

O'Connor said Smith wept when she called him with the news about Mvuemba. "He said, 'Why did he do it? Why did he lie?'" O'Connor recalled.

Mvuemba said police pointed to Smith, whom he had known in elementary school, and told him other witnesses had identified Smith as the shooter. Mvuemba said he also was shown a photo of his friend DeAnthony Williams, who died in the shooting.

"I felt a lot of pressure to go along with it," Mvuemba said.

The two victims had been on the street examining the scene of another shooting the night before when a car pulled up and someone opened fire.

Mvuemba said he tried three times to tell authorities that he didn't see enough to testify, but his pleas were ignored.

"Mvuemba knew it was wrong to identify Mr. Smith as the man who shot him," according to the defense motion. "But when he saw his deceased friend's crying mother in the courtroom, he felt as if he had no other choice."

Mvuemba is currently imprisoned on a rape conviction.

Schnegg said she held many meetings with the defense and prosecution in the year since the recanting was disclosed. The judge said they lacked sufficient information to declare Smith factually innocent, but she vacated his convictions for murder and attempted murder, and ordered him released.

O'Connor said Smith's trial was undermined by ineffective assistance of attorneys who failed to investigate the case properly at trial and on appeal.

"We have a bit of a broken system and the fact that we can come in and make some systemic changes like this and help prevent it from happening to somebody else, it means the world," said Jessica Farris with Innocence Matters.

Smith, meanwhile, said the first items on his agenda now that he's free is to get a license and find a job.

Treating ovarian cancer: New pathways through genetics

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A new discovery that sheds light on the genetic make up of ovarian cancer cells could explain why some women survive longer than others with this deadly disease. A multi-disciplinary team led by the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC), in collaboration with the Lady Davis Institute of the Jewish General Hospital and the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre, has identified genetic patterns in ovarian cancer tumours that help to differentiate patients based on the length of their survival after initial surgery.

The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.

"We discovered genetic differences in the tumours from ovarian cancer patients that relate to their short-term and overall response to standard treatment," explained Dr. Patricia Tonin, the study's lead author and a cancer researcher at the RI MUHC and Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine at McGill University. "Using these genetic 'tools' to examine the tumours removed in the initial surgery, we may be able to offer alternative therapeutic options to women to improve their outcome."

Each year 2,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are reported in Canada, and in 75 per cent of these cases the women die less than five years after their diagnosis. This study focused on the genetic analysis of high grade serous ovarian carcinomas (HGSC) in women from Quebec -- the deadliest type of ovarian cancer which accounts for 90 per cent of deaths.

Almost all women with HGSC have mutations in the gene TP53, which is responsible for making the p53 protein. This gene is known as the "guardian of the genome" because of its role in regulating cell division and thus preventing cancer. Scientists already knew there were two different types of tumours, some with TP53 mutations that produce a mutant p53 protein and others without.

By uncovering the existence of genetic differences between the two types of HGSCs, the study reinforces the idea that there are biological differences in these cancers that can be related to the nature of the TP53 mutation and differences in genetic markers. The research team also confirmed that patient survival was longer in cases with the mutant p53 protein, compared to those that without the mutant protein.

"Biology is showing us which direction to take," enthused Dr. Tonin. "This unique finding paves the way for identifying the pathways involved in cancer progression, leading to the development of alternative therapies and therefore helping to reduce morbidity and mortality in women fighting the disease."

Data Centers Waste Most of the Energy They Consume

Cloud storage is the future, that?s what every tech company, media outlet, and anyone who generally cares about technology has been saying for the last couple of years now. From Netflix to Amazon, from Microsoft to Google, every company is falling over themselves to provide users with access to as much data as they possibly can online. Cloud storage is by far the most convenient way to get access to any type of file you could every want, but that amount of freedom doesn?t come without a cost.?According to The New York Times, most data centers waste a?whopping?90 percent of the energy they pull from the power grid.

A large part of the problem is that data centers, the place where all those files we may or may not want access to at any given moment, are running at their maximum output all day, every day. While I think it wouldn?t be insane to assume to that there?s at least a few people using Netflix every moment of every day, data centers need to be prepared for millions and millions at any given moment.

According to the Times? report, there are ways that most data centers could improve their?efficiency?and reduce their carbon footprint. Unfortunately, it?s very unlikely that any of these operations would implement such measures willingly. Data centers, given that they often store thousands of users? personal information, are not prone to discussing their systems. Many centers also use proprietary technology in data centers, which they may be unwilling to discuss.

It?s like the old saying; ?if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? Unfortunately, if don?t fix it we?re going to need searching the universe for new inhabitable planets a whole lot sooner than we thought.

Motherhood: Split Between Life

Is it just me or does motherhood feel like a balancing act? Trying to maintain a happy home while you keep your own identity.?

It's interesting that having three kids didn't slow me down but when I put my fourth in there, bam...where did my life go? And actually, it wasn't just having the three kids, it's that I had them in a wide range of ages...having two close together is what really sapped me.

And I'm not saying I regret anything, I'm just saying, I'm surprised that my life, the things I want for myself, seem to be moved to the back burner for a while. And it's not that I can't do them, it's that I choose not to. Like, reading that book or going out with friends. I just feel like right now my kids need me more than they ever will and if I step out on this time, it will be gone forever.?

My two older boys don't enjoy spending much time with Mom but to my two babies, I'm still their world. So, when I think about starting a new project that will take all my time, I pause and say, "I'll do that later...in a couple of years."?

And it's not that anyone's asking me, hell, I'm not even sharing the ideas with anyone, I just don't want to lose this time with my kids. I have several regrets with not spending enough time with my oldest son and I don't want to repeat that.

So, as I look at the tiny blue jeans laying on the floor {size 12 months}, I realize it will only be a couple more years and then friends will become more important than hugs with Mom. I'm gonna spend every moment that I can with my kids, and later, I'll rediscover me, for right now I'm happy being their Mom.

Barack Obama's Univision of Lies by Macsmind ? Politics, Culture ...

Obama LiesThe media has been largely silence on Barack Obama?s appearance at the Univision Synopsum yesterday. It was a diaster, which is why you don?t see Chuck Todd and Andrew Michelle having an on air orgasm over his appearence, along with little to no reporting from the rest of the MSM.

Why was it so bad? Well for one he was asked real questions for likely the first time in his presidency. Not only did he answer the questions badly. On some points he, er, lied and basically made an fool out of himself.

I personally think in many ways he exposed himself for the incompetant dope he is. So let?s take a look at the highlights.

Here he is getting grilled about Fast and Furious.

That was a lie. The Fast and Furious program did NOT begin under Bush. Jake Tapper at ABC News:

?Asked about the Fast and Furious program at the Univision forum on Thursday, President Obama falsely claimed that the program began under President George W. Bush.

?I think it?s important for us to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program begun under the previous administration,? the president said. ?When Eric Holder found out about it, he discontinued it. We assigned a inspector general to do a thorough report that was just issued, confirming that in fact Eric Holder did not know about this, that he took prompt action and the people who did initiate this were held accountable.?

In actuality, the Fast and Furious program was started in October 2009, nine months into the Obama presidency.

Previous programs involving ATF agents allowing guns to ?walk? across the border so as to trace them were run during the Bush presidency, but not this particular ?field-initiated program.?

Next exhibit.

Jorge is absolutely correct, but Obama can?t help but start lying, blaming things that had nothing to do with immigration reform. But then he went further to blame Republicans for obstructing him on reform. Fact is that had bullet proof majorities in his first two years and and the GOP could not have stopped him. That 60 vote rule was Harry Reid?s idea, so he could blame him. Besides that Obama claimed on many occasions during the 2008 campaign that he would to to Washington and bring both sides together. He didn?t and the he fact is that he, failed to lead, and in doing so didn?t keep his promise on Immigration Reform, which is why Jorge pressed him so hard on the point, ?But you promised?. He wasn?t buying his excuses and I don?t think the crowd did either. There were audible groans from people near me.

He?s also woefully ignorant of hispanic culture. Unlike in Chicago you WORD is your bond. In hispanic society when you make a promise you keep it ? period. You don?t keep it you are a You make excuses they will think of you as a dishonorable and weak man. He did himself a lot of damage here. In fact all over South Florida this was the most played part of his appearance and many times the commentary and callers were brutal, they didn?t buy his answer at all.

Basically his entire appearance went like this, and the question were just as brutal.

I know because I was there ? I?m a UM alumni ? and I actually got a chance to talk to some of the attendees afterwards and while some expressed support for him, he had his share of supportes, still a good number were not impressed at all. It was a disastrous appearance all around.

The worst part is with the debates coming up Romney looked and spoke as one on message, where Obama appeared to be just mailing it in. He seemed a little annoyed and shaken that he didn?t get the usual ?pass? that comes with some of these events. If this is a preview of the debates Obama is going to get shellacked. Bravo to Jorge Ramos for doing what the majority of the MSM won?t.

UPDATE: Buzzfeed?s Mary Kay Coppins has a interesting article up on how Romney packed them in at his appearance and about that ?make up? issue the left was spinning about. Not quite sure I agree with all the points. After all all campaigns behave as rockstars and make conditions and demands. The Obama campaign is a master of this. During the 2008 campaign media people complained ? they still do ? that the Obama campaign, administration, control too much of the narrative, quote approval etc.

So Coppins piece says more about Obama?s campaign that Romney?s. The left says that Romney?s campaign was on empty, going over a Clift. Looks like on this day they completely outperformed the ?master? at his own game. Perhaps it?s the Obama campaign that?s on the slide.
