BlackBerry Torch 9810 (AT&T)

In a world led by BlackBerry, the BlackBerry Torch 9810 ($49.99) would be king. Built on the same platform as RIM's other new BlackBerry Bold and Torch smartphones, the Torch 9810 is dramatically faster than previous BlackBerrys, with a far better Web browser and a much more powerful processor. Looking almost exactly like the previous Torch, the new model has all the strengths that four-star smartphone?did: solid build, great battery life, and an excellent keyboard.

But the Torch doesn't exist in a vacuum. RIM's BlackBerry 7 phones have been lapped several times by their Android, iOS, and even Windows Phone competitors in terms of apps (both number and quality), Web browsing and general user interface aspects.?

This won't change the minds of enterprise buyers who love BlackBerry's manageability or business e-mailers for whom messaging is their first, second, and third priority. But it makes the Torch 9810 a tough sell to mainstream consumers.

AT&T seems to know this, by the way. $49.99 is an absolutely killer price for a smartphone with these specs. But I won't let the low price sway my review.

Physical Features and Call Quality
This Torch looks almost exactly the same as the previous Torch 9800. It's the same 4.4 by 2.4 by .6 inches (HWD) and the same 5.7 ounces, with the same silver edge around black plastic components. The back is now a flimsy-feeling black plastic with a checkered pattern, something I don't like. The QWERTY keyboard, just like on the previous Torch, is excellent, although it's a little flatter and tighter than the keyboards on BlackBerry Bolds and Curves. There's relatively little here to say "this is a new device," until you turn the phone on.

Hit the wake-up button on the top right?the same place it used to be?and you're presented with a much sharper image on the 9810's 3.2-inch screen than on its predecessor's. The screen is now 640-by-480, rather than 360-by-480, allowing for sharper text, more detailed icons, and often teensy-weensy links on Web pages that you can't quite click on with your finger.

As a voice phone, the Torch 9810 has one major flaw. It over-reports its signal strength. In my weak-signal test, I found the Torch 9810 reported one or two bars when it didn't have enough signal to make a call, which was quite frustrating. In tests around New York City later that day I saw the same thing happening.

When you can connect, call quality is very good. The earpiece is nearly perfect: just the right volume, with clear voices. Transmissions tend to let through a little more background noise than I'd like, but you can still hear the voice on the other side. The speakerphone is moderate-to-loud, and transmissions are clear. Talk time was terrific at 8 hours, 3 minutes, and the phone lasted well more than a day on standby.

Bluetooth support is excellent here, as is voice dialing. In my tests, the Torch connected to three different Bluetooth headsets instantly, supporting all of their features, both stereo and mono. It's one of the most pleasant Bluetooth experiences I've ever had.

The Torch 9810 isn't 4G. It runs at HSPA+ 14.4 speeds on AT&T's network and when roaming abroad. Thanks to RIM's server-side compression, though, email and social-networking messages transmit extremely quickly. The phone has a Wi-Fi hotspot mode that works with the appropriate plan.

Japan's PM picks cabinet and vows pragmatic reforms (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan's new Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda unveiled on Friday a government that will face the task of engineering an economic recovery without blowing a hole in its stretched finances, promising swift fiscal reforms but with an eye on growth.

Noda, 54, the latest of Japan's revolving-door leaders, also said he would seek to balance energy needs with public concerns about safety after a March earthquake and tsunami triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

Noda's cabinet appointments from various groups in his own party revealed a similar desire to find the middle ground, raising doubts whether the new government caught between conflicting demands can achieve more than its short-lived predecessors.

Noda's government, Japan's sixth in five years, must find funds to rebuild from the March disasters while trying to tame a surging yen, which has gained 5 percent against the dollar in the past two months.

"We can lose no time in reforming public finances. But I'm not putting fiscal reform on top of everything else," Noda told a news conference after being formally appointed. "Achieving a good balance between fiscal reform and economic growth is our top priority."

In a sign he plans to call the economic policy shots himself, Noda picked a relative lightweight lawmaker for the finance minister post.

In fact, in their first news briefings both Noda, who served as finance minister under Prime Minister Naoto Kan, and his successor in the job, 49-year-old Jun Azumi, struck strikingly similar notes on the currency and fiscal policy.

"The economy is recovering from the effects of the earthquake, but close attention should be paid to downside risks to the economy such as from slowdown in the West and the yen's rise," Azumi said, echoing Noda's remarks.

YOUNG, FOR JAPAN

Noda tapped the former TV presenter and parliamentary affairs chief for the finance portfolio after his first choice turned it down. He also picked several other lawmakers in their 40s, young by Japanese political standards, for the new cabinet.

Noda, an unassuming conservative who has compared himself to the "dojo" loach, a bottom-feeding fish, faces a long list of challenges as the third premier since his Democratic Party of Japan took power in 2009.

Among them: dragging the world's third-largest economy out of stagnation, forging a new energy policy while ending a radiation crisis at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, rebuilding the tsunami-devastated northeast and finding funds to pay for that and the vast costs of social welfare in an aging society.

Japan's public debt is already double the size of the country's $5 trillion economy, the worst among advanced nations. Moody's rating agency cut the nation's credit rating last week, citing revolving-door leadership as an obstacle to effective economic policies.

Noda also faces a split parliament and rifts within his own party.

His new finance chief's first task will be to oversee drafting of a third extra budget to fund reconstruction from the March disasters, the biggest rebuilding project since the aftermath of World War Two.

ENERGY MIDDLE ROAD

As in his cabinet appointments and economic priorities, Noda also sought to tread the middle ground on energy policy.

He said he understood the public's safety concerns and admitted it would be hard to build new reactors as planned under a 2010 national energy policy but said he wanted to restart off-line reactors once safety checks were cleared.

Noda and his new foreign minister, Koichiro Gemba, must work to tighten ties with close security ally the United States, frayed when the Democrats swept to power two years ago, and keep

oft-tense relations with rising rival China on an even keel.

Stressing that the alliance with Washington was the core of Tokyo's diplomacy, Noda added: "I'll do my utmost to build up friendly ties with not only China but with other neighbors such as South Korea and Russia."

There were no standout appointments in Noda's cabinet, which -- like his earlier picks for party posts -- included a mix of lawmakers from various feuding factions. That led some to wonder whether Noda was not putting too much stress on party unity over expertise. "I don't think this line-up is one that can pull up its socks and respond to the public's hopes," said Katsuhiko Nakamura, executive director at think tank Asian Forum Japan.

How to Build a Better Speaking Page, Part 2

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to my free email updates. For a limited time, I will give you a copy of my brand new e-book, Creating Your Personal Life Plan, just for subscribing! You may also want to follow me on Twitter.

In my previous post, I wrote about how I revamped my Speaking page. I thought I would document the process here, in the event that you are thinking about ?going pro.? This is the second of two posts.

A Screenshot of My Speaking Page

If you are an author?or want to be one?I highly recommend that you consider public speaking as part of building your platform. It is a great way to raise your visibility, promote your products, and develop credibility with your audience.

In my previous post, I covered the first four components of my Speaking page. In this post, I will cover the last six. (You might want to open my new Speaking page in another window and refer to it as you read about the components below.)

After creating my call-to-action, welcome video, page overview, and list of expectations (see my previous post), I did the following:

  1. I wrote a specialized biography. In my previous Speaking page, I simply cut and pasted the copy from the About section of my blog. However, as I passed this section through the filter of what?s-important-to-an-event-planner, I realized that this needed to be totally re-written.

I started with my speaking experience. I also included my media experience, including some of the more noteworthy TV and radio shows I have been on. In my case, the interesting fact is the sheer volume. I have been on more than 1,000 shows.

Next, I presented my credentials, including my career history, the scope of my social media platform, and my prior publishing history. I ended with a brief personal paragraph about my family and personal interests. I think this puts a ?human face? on the bio.

  2. I assembled a collection of video clips. This may be the most important section. It is where the rubber meets the road. At the end of the day, event sponsors want to know how you come across in front of a live audience.

Frankly, I still need better clips. This is a major focus this year. We try to get every sponsor to record my presentation on video. We are looking for 1?2 minute ?moments? that represent me in a live context. It is amazing how many sponsors are willing to record you if you ask.

    Speaking page 3

I also had a company here in Nashville take all my recordings and create a quick, two-and-a-half-minute video demo. (I plan to write more about them in another post.) This is something that sponsors can use with their committee or other decision-makers. I was very pleased with their process and ultimate product.

  3. I compiled my most requested topics. This required the most work. I had go back through the last three years of speaking and identify the topics that were the most popular and I felt were congruent with my ?brand.?

I wrote a brief description of each topic, then I went through iStockPhoto.com and found a photo that I felt was iconic of that talk. I think the visual element is critical. I downloaded the photo and created a slideshow in iWork Keynote. I then exported each slide to create the ?thumbnails? for this section.

    Speaking page 4

  4. I collected endorsements from previous sponsors. These are important as well. Endorsements provide third-party validation. Others are able to say things about you that you could never say about yourself.

As a matter of procedure, I always ask sponsors to provide an endorsement immediately after I speak. This is when my speech is the most fresh in their mind. It is also the point where they are the most excited and likely to write a testimonial.

I used the endorsements in two ways. I provide the full endorsement in the right-hand sidebar. However, I boiled down the endorsement to the cr?me de la cr?me and include them in a WordPress ?slider? in the main body copy. I used NivoSlider for this. It looks like this:

  5. I inserted a calendar of upcoming events. As a speaker, the busier your calendar is the better. It demonstrates you are in-demand. This helps validate the claims you are making elsewhere.

I used to use a WordPress plugin called GigPress, which I still recommend. It is excellent. However, for this iteration of my Speaking page, I had my web developer write some custom code. I wanted to be able to announce each engagement via a mini-post on my blog and then have that post automatically included on my calendar.

    Speaking Page 5

I also wanted to show the full list of engagements, providing the event planner (or someone just interested in hearing me speak) with the ability to expand the event and see more detail.

  6. I included a picture of me speaking. Visually, it is important for event sponsors to see you in action. I wanted a picture of me having fun in front of a big audience. This enables sponsors to visualize you in front of their audience. It is important to have a professional photographer take the picture.

I would think carefully about what you want to portray in the picture, then communicate to the photographer what you are after. I would also ask him or her to take plenty of audience shots as well.

I am sure I will improve this as I go, but this was a major step-up from my previous page. I thought it might be helpful to you as you think through creating something similar.

Questions: What have you included in your Speaking page? What (if anything) do you hope to incorporate after reading these two posts? You can leave a comment by clicking here. Disclosure of Material Connection: Some of the links in the post above are ?affiliate links.? This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will add value to my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission?s 16 CFR, Part 255: ?Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.?

Proposed Missions Could Deflect Space Rocks Like Asteroid Apophis (SPACE.com)

While scientists keep a close watch on the myriad space rocks near Earth, they don?t yet have a solid plan on what to do if one appears headed on a collision course toward our planet.

Two new studies propose potential spacecraft missions that would collide with asteroids in an attempt to deflect them away from our planet. Such missions, some researchers say, may be among our best hopes to ward off asteroids that may pose a threat to Earth.

One concept from researchers in China involves deflecting an asteroid with a spacecraft propelled by solar sails, giant mirrors that fly through space via the force of sunlight reflecting off them. A possible target is the asteroid known as Apophis, named after the Egyptian god of darkness because of fears that it might crash into Earth.

The researchers noted that giving Apophis a tiny shove at a key moment in 2029 would help ensure that it would not approach Earth in 2036, the year that it is forecasted to come near. The scientists calculated that a solar sail could hurl a spacecraft fast enough at Apophis to potentially knock it off course. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

"The impact velocity can be as high as 100 kilometers per second (223,700 mph), which is much higher than the impact velocity of a regular spacecraft, which is about 30 kilometers per second (67,100 mph)," study lead author Shengping Gong at Tsinghua University in Beijing told SPACE.com.

Europe's asteroid smasher

Another potential plan, a European Space Agency mission called Don Quijote, would also seek to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid in an attempt to deflect it.

The mission would involve two probes. One would smash into its target asteroid at more than 30,000 mph (48,000 kph), while the other would orbit the asteroid six months beforehand to observe its behavior before and after impact.

However, Don Quijote or any other mission aiming to slam into an asteroidsto deflect it would need to analyze such collisions in greater detail than before thought, according to scientists at the Open University in England and their colleagues. [Video: Asteroid Collision Watch]

Instead of measuring only an asteroid's orbit before and after impact, researchers found that its diameter, reflectivity and surface roughness would also have a large effect on how it would react to a collision. As such, these details need to monitored closely as well, significantly altering such missions.

In addition to radio transmitters to help pin down an asteroid's orbit, these spacecraft would need to carry sophisticated imaging arrays, and possibly seismic sensors on the space rock to see if it would break apart upon impact.

"In order for the mission to succeed, you have to characterize the physical properties to distinguish effects from the deflection and effects from other non-gravitational perturbations," study lead author Stephen Wolters, an astronomer now at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., told SPACE.com.

Picking an asteroid target

The researchers do note that the asteroids they used in their calculations are not immediate threats.

The asteroid Apophis is expected to fly harmlessly by Earth on April 13, 2036, with only a 1-in-233,000 chance of hitting our planet, while neither of the two asteroids studied for the Don Quijote mission, designated 2002AT4 and 1989ML, is close to crossing Earth's orbit.

Although Apophis was picked for the study only as an example, "the results are universal" and could apply to other asteroids, Gong said.

"The idea for the mission was not to deflect a dangerous asteroid, but to deflect a safe one a little bit," Wolters said of his team's results. "This is practice so that we are prepared when there is a real danger. At the moment you might need a decade or more to prepare a real deflection mission. By having test missions, you cut down on that time, so you are prepared if you find an asteroid with fewer years until impact."

The Entrepreneurial Reward | Spacecoast Business Magazine

The Heroes Who Serve the Heroes

Many of us assume that the reward of entrepreneurialism is the freedom to pursue your business dream and then spend the fruits of your labors on your family or on the house, car or vacation of your fantasies.? But after you have done those things, I have observed there is a reward that few begin the entrepreneurial journey realizing ? it is having the ability to make other people?s dreams a reality.? In some cases that may be providing jobs, but for others it is something far more significant.

A few months ago I received an email from a celebrated entrepreneur in our community, Walter Gatti.? He asked me to join him on a flight for the Veterans Airlift Command to San Antonio.? Honestly, I was more excited about flying in Walter?s jet than I was interviewing the young soldier we were transporting, but that only lasted until we met him.

Two Humble Heroes

Touching down in Ft. Lauderdale, we were greeted like rock stars by the executive airport personnel.? There we met Sgt. Juan Arimis and part of his family.? Juan had come to this county from Columbia and to expedite his citizenship he joined the Army.? On his second tour in Iraq, an IED (Improvised Exploding Device) blew up close to him.? Most of the skin tissue on his right side was burned and he lost both his forearms.

Shaking hands with someone?s prosthesis is awkward, but Juan was very comfortable in himself and as we settled into our flight. ?I asked him about how he dealt with his experience ? not just the physical but the psychological.? ?When I regained consciousness after the attack (two months later) and realized what my condition was, I prayed that God would take my life.? Gradually,? he said, ?I learned to except what happened and even to be thankful, as there were a lot of guys worse off than me.?? He then shared a visit from his lovely wife, whom I later met.? She told him, ?I know this is hard, Juan, it is hard on all of us, but we are going to make it together.?

I had to hold back my tears when I looked down at one of his arms and saw, etched into the plastic, a message which I first mistook for instructions.? In a sense I suppose they were instructions, it read, ?I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I respond.? So it is with you; you are in charge of your attitude.?

On the return flight Walter confided in me, ?It is gratifying to be able to serve these heroes in this way but honestly every time I transport one of them I realize how petty the things that get me down really are.?

From a grateful nation, thanks Juan and thanks Walter.

About Veterans Airlift Command

The Veterans Airlift Command (VAC) provides free air transportation to wounded veterans and their families for medical and other compassionate purposes, through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots.? Their priority is on the veterans of Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).? VAC was founded by a highly decorated Army helicopter pilot Walt Fricke, who himself spent six months in the hospital after being medivaced out of Vietnam in 1968.

Tropical Storm Jose brushing past Bermuda (AP)

HAMILTON, Bermuda ? Tropical Storm Jose spun over the open Atlantic just to the west of Bermuda on Sunday, buffeting the wealthy British territory with gusty winds and intermittent showers.

The 10th named storm of the season was passing about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Bermuda and packing winds of nearly 45 mph (75 kph), causing some storm surge in western parts of the isolated island chain. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

"The tropical storm-force winds are limited to our western marine area. They aren't actually reaching the island," meteorologist Ken Smith of the Bermuda Weather Service said.

Intermittent showers mixed with sunshine in Bermuda, which lies about 580 miles (933 kilometers) east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, already battered by Hurricane Irene. Many islanders headed to church in their Sunday best.

A street market popular with tourists was canceled on St. George's, but most Sunday events went on normally.

Jose, which formed early Sunday, could bring as much as 3 inches (8 centimeters) of rain to Bermuda, but there were no sustained downpours reported in the territory.

Jose was moving north at about 17 mph (28 kph), said the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.

U.S. meteorologist Jeff Masters, who writes a popular weather blog, said Tropical Storm Jose will not survive long due to strong upper-level wind shear from Irene, which was swirling northward over New England toward Canada on Sunday after weakening to a tropical storm from a once-powerful hurricane.

Smith said Jose was expected to weaken into a tropical depression Monday and later dissipate.

Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Gert skirted past Bermuda, kicking up choppy seas along the island chain's coast but passing well east of the tiny British archipelago. It caused no serious damage.
